Hohner Headless B2A-V Active Preamp

One of these is up for sale locally. I did a search here on TB and learned a lot about the pros and cons. Do I need it? No. Do I want it? Of course. It seems to be the poor man’s Steinberger.

One of the cons on a former thread was the active preamp is a gravy-sucking pig and should be swapped out. I could not find any literature as to which knob does what in either active or passive mode. Does anyone know this? Does anyone know a viable replacement active preamp that would do the trick? Any expertise will help

Hard to say exactly. The first 2 knobs could either be volume/volume or volume/blend. The stacked knob should be bass/treble. The switch should be active/passive given the led. You should be able to find any number of aftermarket preamps that would have controls that would fit into the available holes.

The first two knobs control the volume of each one pickup. You can get several tonal options that way. The stacked knob only works on the preamp, and is then simply volume and tone in addition to the two other knobs.

This is how it should be factorywise, but many people have fiddled around with these basses and their pickups so it can be set up differently. I have seen where they put the preamp permanently on and use the preamp switch as an on/off switch for example.
