I'd have your guitar player friend do all the buffing for you. Get the materials, make her pay for them, and then sit and watch her buff it all out to how it was when she borrowed it. It's the least she can do for you.

In a pinch... cheap and available polishing compound = toothpaste

I've used toothpaste multiple times to polish up an area on basses that's gotten lightly scratched or marked from playing. Those marks may need something more than a light polishing compound though.

+1. Dunno how it will work on a bass, but toothpaste + a Dremel buffer pad on low speed will fix all but the worst - scratched CDs.

I use Meguires Scratch-X. Does a great job.

I was looking at that also: I blew the pic up just to determine if it was a smudge or a serious dent - I can't identify it.
If the OP is still monitoring this I would hope he'd answer that.

If that's a dent, the problems get truly painful.
