How do you combat Neck Dive?

I sell it and buy something else.

Many folks tell you that a wide strap will fix it, but that only masks the issue by spreading the weight over your shoulder. So it creates additional tug on your left side, and if you're wearing a shirt that slides around, your bass will slide with it. It's really just a band aid for poorly designed basses.
 
Can't be bothered reading all the comments to see if someone hasnt already said it, But if you want to move the Strap lock WITHOUT drilling a new hole in the bass.. Provided your bass is a Bolt on, take one of the screws out of the back plate, and screw in a strap holder. Usually the lowest nut is removed, but whichever is most comfortable in terms of the neck dive.

I think this would benefit me. How much higher should the bridge strap button be moved? A small amount like 1/2 inch, or something along the lines of 2 inches?

Unless you've got a slab-body bass with no forearm cut, you probably can't bring the strap button far enough around the lower bout to get the degree of shift you need. Even then, the strap button needs to be close to vertical, or the strap will simply pull off. It's also important that the new strap placement doesn't interfere with your arm.

Given those factors, you're far more likely to get what you need by using a rear-mounted flush Dunlop Straplok.

Using my Dingwall for a reference as to where to relocate the strap button on some other bass, is going to be useless. The ABZ has a short, light headstock, the body is scooped out at the butt end of the body, the scale is normal on one side and 3" oversize on the other, and the bridge is slanted...

The best thing to do, is try some balance experiments on your own basses, to determine the best placement.

The simplest method I've come up with, is to extend the back end of a strap by tying a shoelace through the hole at the end, dropping it down behind the back of the instrument, and then bringing it forward and upward so you can loop the lace around a volume or tone control, a 1/4" plug inserted in the output jack, or even a piece of bridge hardware.

With the lace looped over a suitable hang point, the weight of the bass will hang off that point as if it were suspended by a strap button somewhere on the back of the body.

Obviously, you want to be cautious. This is not the time to start jumping around like a jack-in-the-box, and I wouldn't do this over a hard concrete floor...

If the bass is still neck-diving, move the lace forward to the next hang point. If the headstock is trying to rise, then move the lace back to a hang point closer to the bridge.

On a P-bass, you have 3 immediately obvious balance points- Volume, Tone, and a cord stuck in the output jack. If you have an active bass, that's a bonus because you could have as many as 5 or 6 test points to hang your bass.

Once you've adjusted the lace and strap to your liking and the instrument is hanging at a suitable angle, you can mark the back of the bass anywhere along a line that the strap passes over. This will become your drilling point. I would recommend placing the hole just a little to the bass side of the center line of the instrument.

Another couple of cautions:
1. The bass needs to be suitably supported while you're drilling the hole, preferably using a drill press to get good vertical alignment. Use a drill stop, to make sure that you don't drill unnecessarily deep.
2. You don't want to drill down into anything expensive inside your bass. Especially on a twin-pickup instrument, you need to be careful to avoid the wiring harness, pickups, bridge hardware, etc...

If you're not good with power tools, be SURE to farm this job out to a pro.

I certainly feel that way about basses that don't have a proper upper horn (unless they're extremely light, like a Hofner).

It's a good thing that not everybody feels that way, though. A lot of great music has been played on Thunderbirds, Alembics, EB0's, etc.
 
Asking around/researching is telling me that almost all basses neck dive. Especially when you go to 5/6 string. My neck isn't eactly 'diving'. It doesn't point to the ground. It is parallel with the ground. I would like to keep it more vertical. I think I'm going to try a wider strap for starters. If that doesn't work, no big deal. I'll work with it. It doesn't overly bother me, I just figured I'd stop it if I could with a simple fix.

Your bass sounds balanced if it's parallel, if your wanting to change the balance and rotate the neck 'up' you can use the Hipshot Ultralite tuners and investigate adding mass to the bridge (don't know what type of bridge you currently have) if it's possible.

I did the "Dingwall Mod" to my Squier P5.

Cheap (under $20 for a set of the flush-mount Dunlops), and it worked like a charm. It's much more comfortable, now that the neck dive is eliminated and it hangs slightly head-high. Because of the way the strap wraps around the back of my rib cage, it's also a little more stable when I get to bopping around.

Have any of you guys tried keeping your hands on your bass? That might keep it where you want it....

I don't want to spend all night having to hold up the neck, especially playing sitting down, it's much easier when you're not fighting the bass.

I have no bass that has neck dive. Not sure I would want to. They are both Carvins.

Interesting inputs about the strap buttons. Bunny plays his signature model Carvin that has buttons leaving the neck far more vertical than most - he likes playing that way. Kinda like an upright.

In short, the straps have been mentioned. Not sure if there's another solution. I like the input from the fellow above who mentioned switching from one Alembic to another. I totally get that. You like a builder and brand, and refine your choices to best suit YOU. Hooray for that.

I have two basses and I'm about to get the 3rd one. two of them will be Warwick Thumbs.
The Thumb does neck dive. Only certain basses do this. For example jazz and P-bass and ANY OTHER BASS WITH A UPPER HORN REACHING THE 12TH FRET DO NOT NECK DIVE and position perfectly onto the player's body.
For longer gigs I prefer the jazz, light as a breeze and perfectly balanced, 45° no problem if I want.

But...it's not only a matter of a wrong choice.
I CHOOSE to buy and own the Thumb because no other bass has its tone and feels so sexy under my hands. Plus, I do a lot of studio and recording work and the Thumb is the king in this contexts.

On my first thumb (ovangkol/ovangkol/wengé) BO 4, I swapped the machines to Hipshot ultralites and used a wide leather strap...the problem did not disappear magically, but now the degree of it is negligible. It positions spontaneously with the neck pointing upwards by 20 degrees, balanced enough for the majority of playing occasions bar the longest ones (1 time per year a open jam session lasting 5-6 hours).

I judge this as a little sacrifice for having that kind of growl

Over the decades, I've installed strap buttons on the back of several bass bodies for that precise reason. I've also added a reamed out strap button under an extended neck screw to alleviate neck dive.

Those two in conjunction with lighter tuners can help immensely.

At times I'll use one, two or all of the above methods...on my new Gretsch G5442BDC I replaced the tuners with U/L tuners I modified with my DIY aluminum string posts and relocated the strap button from the upper horn to the center of the neck/body joint on the back. Now that notorious neck-diver hangs perfectly for me.

BTW, I usually use Grolsch straplocks.
