How do you feel about body modification?

It seems you're just on a tirade. Maybe to feel justified. Maybe you're so big on these forums you feel you have a presence to keep up. Not really sure. You saw she was a little weird and instantly discounted her as a person. I dunno about anyone else here, but that's what sounds like closed-mindedness to me. She has legitimate mental health problems. She'll receive proper treatment for them when she can bring them up to a real psychiatrist and not a family doctor whose idea of help is to constantly up her Xanax dose. Furthermore, you had no obligation to even make a comment regarding that. Try insulting any other man's girl and see how it goes over.

I came on here asking a legitimate question about how people felt about body modification... I know there's even a church for it. I wanted people experienced on both spectrums. Instead, you decided to comment on my "crazy" girlfriend. Not only does your lack of maturity disappoint me, it seems you're just trying to make a name as resident @$$hole. And obviously you either don't care about the many ways things would go or have so much confidence in yourself that you're willing to say that the way you just pointed out is the way it'll so obviously happen. Or maybe you just don't think I'll call you out on it because I'm a 16 year old incapable of rational thought.

This is not a thread for relationship device. This is not a thread about mental disorders. This is not a thread about women or associated memes. I had high hopes for this thread, and it quickly dropped to de-railing and even personal attacks. Please keep it back on track. Or at least drop it if you're not interested in the subject... I heard some very legitimate opinions...

OK, you win. Body modification: I don't like it.

BTW, I take my lumps here just like everybody else.

Also, I'm not the only person here who is trying to give you valuable advice.

Fun question for anybody still interested in the topic: at what size do you consider gauges too big? And what's your definition of too big? Not aesthetically pleasing/creepy? Gets caught on things? How loose it is.

For me, I know people with holes gauged (I'm guessing) about an inch and a half in diameter... way too much. They can be kind of cool, but to me, they start getting weird when you can clearly see through them. Size 0 or 00 is where I start getting uncomfortable with them. At that point, they're still not gross or anything, but I start seeing them as very separate from other piercings.

The OP provides insufficient information.

There's no evidence that she's going to follow through with her plans. She could be a normal teenager, dreaming about things that she can't have right away. By the time she's old enough to get these procedures done, and pay for them, she will probably have moderated her plans.

Shame on us for wanting to be/remain physically attracted to our partners.

That's a good discussion question for me... and often times with body art, subjective tastes are very different between people. I think it's something to at least clear up in any relationship where it might be an issue. If you know they're the type to want a tattoo and you don't want it, it's a good conversation to have to clear things out. In the end, it's sort of an ethical dilemma between letting them have control over their body while trying to make sure both of your tastes are represented.

There was a time when I was seriously into body modifications, but I've since kinda cooled off on the idea. I'd originally planned when I was 18 to get a couple of ear piercings, a lip and nose stud. I'm now 23 and I've got only a top ear stud in addition to the usual bottom ear piercing.

I may at some point re-stretch my ears, but this is going to depend heavily on things like any future jobs and other commitments.

Just talked to said girlfriend... no longer wants a septum or Dahlia piercing, but she is considering a second lip ring in the fashion of Spider Bites or Snake bites... both of which I find oddly repulsive on almost everyone. The sleeve is out too because she thinks (and I agree) that a certain number of tattoos becomes ridiculous and it becomes hard to appreciate.

Still wants to try the suspension thing though... apparently it's a euphoric experience because of the adrenaline that numbs you and the factor of hanging... I'm also afraid it may be addictive, like so many things involving endorphins.

I know you don't want to hear it, kiddo, but she CRAZY. One thing you'll (eventually) learn in life is that people like that be it a band mate or woman, they'll take you and whoever they can grab down with them. A signature move of women is to often get between you and your best friend, so you end up single and without a bud to even have a beer with.

Anyways, this isn't a thread about my relationship, it's about body modification. All of it. Piercings, tattoos, scars, suspension, enlargement, stretching, splitting, whatever:

Since when did scars become a fashionable form of body modification?

I earned my scars the hard way by having a car's bumper travelling at 60+ mph almost rip my leg off while I was walking.

IMO, your a little out of line here.

It's obvious you're a bright kid, who is mature beyond his years, articulate and probably raised in a decent family. But.....

If you didn't want to talk about your relationship, mental disorders, etc. you never should have brought it up. You let the cat out of the bag, not us. If you wanted to stick to the topic, then you should have without including extraneous info that you might get comments on. What did you expect from a message board?
Also, if you value your girlfriend and her family, you should respect her privacy and not bring up her mental issues. Because now, if we meet her at one of your shows, our first impression is that she's the crazy piercing girl with a messed up mom. If that's not who she truly is, then you shouldn't represent her in that way. Put it this way, how would she or her family feel if they knew you put all this stuff on a message board?

You probably don't want to hear this, but here goes:
As smart as you are, you are still a teenager. We've been there before. The difference is that we've been your age once before, but you haven't been our age yet. Which means we have experience seeing what comes out the other end of these kinds of things. You only see what's going in, and it will take time for you to see what's coming out. We're saving you that hassle. I suggest taking a step back and listening to the perspectives of guys who have walked that trail before. Because the easiest thing to do is just ignore your situation. It requires effort to saying something about it. As I grew older, I grew to appreciate when people would take the time to comment on something even though it may be completely wrong. Because it would be easier for them to not care, and not put any effort into me. I appreciate when people put an effort into me, because it has made me a better person. You shouldn't take those things for granted.

Now I could go into a discussion about adolescent relationships, the dynamic between you and your girlfriend, co-dependent behaviors, etc. Instead I'll keep it to body modification. And today, I would like a mechanical back.

Sane women are as crazy as a normal man can endure. Why press your luck?

Allow me to go back to my teen years, when I wanted that Dokken and pointy guitar tattoo subsequently.

When I was a wise teen bagging groceries at the store, I worked with this guy Eric. He rode the short bus. He never really said much, but every time women weren't looking he'd give us guys an odd hand gesture. After a few years, curiosity got the better of me and I asked him what that meant. "Crazy woman." I came back that he did this with almost all women. "They ALL crazy." Eric wasn't all there, but he gets it.

+1

I wish I would have learned at the OP's age that I should listen to those older and wiser than myself. I do believe that I learned that lesson at a much earlier age than most, but I could be a lot further ahead in life if I had done so earlier.

I'm with Munji and Jive. Once you open the dam, the water flows in every direction and you can't control opinions or comments nor should you try. Nothing was stated out of disrespect for you, it was learned advice which you can freely choose to heed or ignore.

I also want to emphasize the statement that listening to those that have been there and done that is always a wise move. It doesn't make them "right" or "smarter", but things tend to follow the law of averages. For instance, the chance that a relationship started before the age of 16 lasts until the age of 30 is less than 2%.

And there is not a single 16 year old out there today who can effectively dispute that - but 100% of them believe that they represent the 2% exception.

Whew! I was starting to think I should feel bad.
