How do you listen to music?

At home, on my Mac laptop. My collection is on Apple Music (used to be Apple iTunes), almost all uploaded at a bitrate of 320kbps. I bluetooth it into my JBL soundbar and subwoofer. Sounds pretty righteous.

In my vehicle, Sirius and FM radio.

When I'm on my walks and hikes, no music.

I don't listen to music as in sitting in the living room on the couch playing a record any more. I'm just not interested even though I have hundreds of LPs in the basement.

Back in the day (60s and 70s) I remember we'd always have a record or 8-track (yes, really) or cassette going during a party or any group event, and sometimes just sit around and get stoned and actually listen to the whole side of a record.

Now, if I have to learn a song or I'm looking for a song in the genre I'm playing, I'll find it on Youtube and play along with it. Otherwise, I don't listen to music as an activity in itself unless I'm on a long road trip and I play my 8-tracks - Oops, sorry, I mean CDs.

At home, we get Sirius channels via Dish TV, so if I just need musical wallpaper, like listening to radio in the past, it’s tuned in to Little Steven’s Underground Garage, through Boston Acoustics. In addition, I have the Pandora app on my phone with a bunch of custom channels there, plus a few other streaming specialty radio stations, run through a pair of Alesis powered near-field studio monitors. In the car, CDs, although when I’m down in Palm Springs I’m tuned in to this station…

…American songbook, personality vocalists, swing/jazz, Rat Pack…Frank at least once an hour, some Dean, some Tony, and much more. I can’t stand earbuds, use headphones only when necessary. Pete Townshend’s hearing problems came from cranked cans, not the Hiwatts.
Going back to vinyl just seems absurd to me.

I do most music listening on headphones to keep the peace in the house as my wife works from home and my eclectic choices and volume levels can drive her nutty. I stream new music on Amazon or YouTube, listen to CDs, Lp and music stored on computer, tablets and phone. I still have a great stereo system but it mostly gets used when we are watching a movie or concert video.

80% of the time is Spotify>Iphone>Bose earplugs.

The other 20% is Spotify>Iphone> Bluetooth device: Rockbox speaker if I am playing music in the patio, Klipsch speaker /subwoofer in my living room/dinning room, and a massive 7.2 Sony/Klipsch if I am listening in the TV room, the subwoofer is a Velodyne 12.

My wife like to listen music using her iPhone, I hate it, sounds terrible. ‍

People like me who spend days in recording studios producing music a high quality formats are always a butt-hurt to think that most people will eventually listen on low quality streaming sites but that is the way it is.

I never listen to CDs or vinyl any more. I have all my old stuff digitised and stored on HDD. But nowadays I listen mainly on Amazon streaming or on YouTube, Bluetoothed to some really good powered monitors in my main room, or smaller Alexa + monitors setups in other rooms or through good quality headphones (NOT ear buds ).

It’s critical we support by purchasing music. Bandcamp has the highest $ return for musicians.

Physical copies have become too expensive for me although I have a collection of over 2000 cds.

Here's my $0.02:

Enjoyment and final mastering checks: my home stereo (independent JBL and Snell speakers systems). Preferred format is 45's, followed by LPs. Hard to find clean 45's these days, and not appropriate for many types of music, but an awesome format. Digital files as a last resort but no actual CDs - all CDs are stored digitally.

Radio (XM-LSUG, other stations when the playlist here is boring) while driving.

Work: digital music from wherever over powered Yamaha studio monitors and my studio digital audio interface (Focusrite). Preferred source is local down loaded files, but will use YouTube for research. Occasionally through AKG cans. No streaming sources. Don't get these. Might be a generational thing.
