How many basses do you own? (Currently) Part 2

Down to 4 basses and I’m constantly torn between trying to trim down even more, and wanting to buy every cool bass that pops up for sale.

I’ve sold 3 instruments in the last 6 months, mostly as a result of life choices. I sold my two guitars (G&L USA ASAT Special and Taylor 110e) after deciding I’m going to be a pure-play bassist, and I sold my fretless when I decided to double down on upright bass.

- Primary: G&L L-1000 CLF with GHS pressurewounds (about to put a set of TI jazz flats from the drawer back on this one). Sounds fantastic in a mix
- Lakland Skyline Joe Osborn w/ Fralins, MIK, with GHS Precision Flats - chefs kiss, so good
- Yamaha BB435 that I have strung with LaBellas and am not super happy with it. Just bought a set of nickel rounds to try to reboot this bass.
- I also have a plywood upright that makes me very happy even though I am not super great at it and probably won’t ever be. It is my guilty pleasure bass.

All in all I’m mostly happy with my collection but I would love to add a Lakland 55-02 to try out for 35” scale and 19mm string spacing.

I think I last chimed in a couple years ago. So, currently it's:

Two fives: both Laklands a 55-02d, and a 55-60 fretless. Five fours: fretted and fretless Fender Jazzes, a Spector NS2a, a Sterling by Music Man Ray34, and the Squier Precision Plus that I got for my kids, but it's now my outdoor show bass, because neither of them stayed with it. An NS WAV4 and a Chapman Stick.

Additionally, I have two Strats, a Tele, a Les Paul, an Ibanez AS80, an Epiphone Dot, three Taylor acoustics, two mandolins, two synthesizers, a seven piece PDP drum kit, and a hand percussion drum kit (Congas, Bongos, and Conguitas)

That's not excessive. Is it?

I've recently become a firm devote of the American mid 90s deluxe jazz basses. Specifically the ones with the Suhr pick-ups and preamp. I put a Noll pre-amp with Delano pickups in one and a John East with another set of Delanos on the 3rd bass. I have a '93, a '97, and a '99, (and a 2022 MIM). I think this vintage of Fender basses is going to become the next "hot ticket". The 60s and 70s Jazz basses have become priced way out of reach. A 1993 bass made in Corona California (during a period when Fender got their mojo back) goes for about $1300, give or take. And with 30 years for the wood to mature naturally, these are the jewels, the diamonds in the ruff. Even the cases are becoming vintage collectibles. (Blue label or red label.)

I plan to top out at 5. I want a 5-string acoustic bass, a Furch if I can find one.

Go for the lakland. It is a completely different beast than a L1k. It’s got a crisp, zingy, piano like tone with roundwounds. My 55-02 was a nice complement to the L1k.
Feels like a super jazz (& then some) while my L1k feels like a super P (& then some)

I am down to 2 now made room in my music room I am also a guitar player . I have my baby a bass I just love. I have a mint 1990 Ibanez SR800 the body and neck is awesome almost new condition. The pickups were gone out of it so I loaded it with a set of EMG Geezer Butlers. And my wife just bought me a new Candy Apple Red Yamaha TRBX304, right now enough bass guitars for me. I all so have an American Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster, Hollowbody type Les Paul by Gretsch . And a Gibson acoustic .

3 now. One is about to get replaced though.

1) Mitchell TB500 PJ. I like how it sounds and how it looks. But for some reason, it's just not what I want. It's about to sell on Ebay and that will help fund a Squier Mustang bass. If it goes like I think it will, the Mustang will probably be the main bass I play.
2) Steinberger Spirit. I love this bass and have played it all over California. It's my work horse.
3) Ibanez AEB10BE. My acoustic bass. I like it.

Hard to see 'em, but it's no surprise my Steinberger is up front. I've got two of the Acoustic amps now, the 15" and the 12" models. I still have my old Ampeg stuff, but that's going away. It doesn't matter how much I like it if I can't move it.

Did you put nylon wrapped strings on there?

Yea. I've been doing alot of little things to it to get it where I like it, including adding tapewounds. I'll likely be replacing the pick guard, too, as this one doesn't quite fit right.
