How many basses

I currently have 5, but have had as many as 7 in the past. My wife doesn't complain too much as long as I con her into believing I really need all of them 
Quite literally, having money and voluntarily exchanging it for something else means both parties deserve the fair results of the exchange. If a guy wants to buy more than one bass guitar, he deserves whatever he pays for.
What is the difference between working a non-music job to get the gear and working a music job to get the gear? Who made you in charge of deciding who "deserves" something or not?

The big truck came yesterday 
and I now have 5.
Squier CV P, VM Active Jazz IV, VM 70s Jazz, VM Fretless, and a Douglas 6 string from Rondo. They all get played as do the 5 other guitars, and I refuse to guilty if I shop for another, (but I might wait a while.)

As I tell my girlfriend, whenever she asks me 'how many basses do I need'? The answer is always the same:

I had 1 bass from 1992 until 2001.
Then I had two basses from 2001 until 2008.
Since 2008 I've had as many as 11 basses at one time, but I have 7 now w/ one of them for sale.

I have 4 basses, Many guitars, and too many amps to count. If you buy quality instruments with decent resale/collector value, tell her they're an investment that can appreciate over the years.

My wife once told me I had enough basses. She's always wanted me to understand what she means, not just hear what she says. I took this as an opportunity to improve our marital communications.
When she said was that I had enough basses, what she really meant, was that I need more amps. So I picked up a really sweet Ampeg SVT-CL. She was really impressed with my sensitivity.
I can easily justify three, but I own seven (I left the Squier Jaguar SS out of my sig).
The easy to justify ones:
2010 MIA Fender P, customized to be a PJ, strung with roundwounds
2008 MIA Fender P, with flats (even my wife gets the reasoning behind having a different bass strung with flats)
1986 MIJ PJ bass - bought used for $350, this is the one that is taken to the "scary" bars
The other four I don't need at all, but they were fairly inexpensive used purchases, I generally use gig money for the purchases, and I don't spend money drinking, smoking or gambling. Easy conversation there ... "Should I buy this bass or should I drink, smoke and gamble?"
If you don't gig, but drink, smoke and gamble, I have no advice to offer you! LOL

I have 5 Basses, 1 Guitar and 1 Bass rig. I'm showing my wife your picture...she needs to understand that sometimes you NEED 20+ basses, in the hunt to find "the tone"..
I have 5 which is IMO 2 too many ... all I really need is a good 5er, a good 4banger, and a good passive 4banger.

Well, no. I do bust my a** for it though.
I have 3+1: a passive jazz, a passive P, an active jazz... and a cheap squire to take with me on business trips.
Honestly I don't even know how many Bass's and Guitars I own. Or even where they are all located at this moment. I have 10 basses and 2 guitars in my studio right now, a veritable GC sans crappy guitars in a 15X12 storage facility (for safety) and probably 10 or more others out on loan to close friends, studios and touring bands.

I've been single since my divorce in 2002. There have been a few basses passing through my hands since then. I try to keep the number on hand reasonable so that my string replacement bill is not exorbitant. I'm extremely happy with the tone generating tools presently in my box: 4 string Dingwall Super J/P, 4 string 32" precision, 5 string Dingwall Super J/P, and 5 string Dingwall Super J/J.
