How much do you drink at a gig?

Thank you for your insight. I think there is a medium ground between sheer irresponsibility -- i.e. getting behind the wheel tanked, and behaving with moderation. MADD got the severe drunks off the road, but now I fear they're after the person that has a glass or two of wine or beer with dinner at a restaurant. I think that just as the guy from the UK posted earlier that they are adjusting to their laws, we too in the US are moderating our behavior with ours.
I only do church performances but I still like to go out afterwards with church friends. I'll typically have one pint or so, two if there is some occasion that falls on the same night such as a birthday.
Same with university stuff. After the meetings it's a tradition to go to the bar and chat with other Christian Union members and the guest speakers. Here I rarely drink, partially cause here I have to carry all my equipment from the venue back home (which is not far but is still a hefty task with a heavy case).
I normally drink water in between songs and between groups of songs.

depends on the mood really. if it's an important gig, I'm usually stressed before entering stage, so I don't even eat, and drink water and soda, then beers on stage.
if it's a gig I don't really care about, well I drink anything, water if the stage is too hot.
I once had a gig 2 days after I passed my MSc thesis presentation... well my band wasn't too happy about me
I think the soundman turned my bass off hehe.
My parents came to see me once also... "damn, you really drink a lot of beer on stage!" haha.
Sometime we also share a bottle of wine on stage with my singer... a la Pearl Jam. It's actually quite rock n roll

We gigged from 9:00 to 1:00 on Friday & I drank water all night. I then enjoyed two beers during the loadout & the perfunctory chat/gig review afterward. No problems. I tend to forget my place on even the simplest tunes if I drink even half a beer, so I just don't. All told, except for the chick singer, I think the band totalled one beer (keyboard player) during the gig. As my buddy once said, "the guys in your band can't even spell trouble" which is about how it should be for a bunch of middle-aged guys, IMO.
My friend, you have a drinking problem. Time for AA. I'm serious. Your comment has trouble written all over it.
Nope... Utah beer is 3.2% max.
You can get stronger stuff, but you have to be in a "private club" or buy it from the state-run liquor store.That being said, I've never had more than one during a gig, and that was only one time. I'm more of a bottled water guy.
I like my playing when i'm drunk. I sound much better!!;-)

I used to drink much more. We had a rule in my former band that we could get drunk once a year on the job!
Once my keyboardplayer couldn't sit upright at his keys so i had to put a knee up on his back to hold him while we played. Good times, good times!!
But as i grew older and maybe wiser, i found that i can have a full weekend if i don't drink that much.

Used to drink a TON, before, during and after...but that is what the 80's were all about. (and early 90's)
Now I like a Bud or two to loosen up...

None before, none after. I can get loose off of orange juice. No, ginger ale or a cola work for me.
I might sip champagne on new years, but thats about it. I like me some caffeine though
and I definitely do not even associate with any illegal drugs, I had an extremely dark past with drugs, went to rehab and never looked back. I had to basically *abandon* the band I was with (we were a pretty popular local band at the time) because of their drug use.
Was that too much?

Depends on the gig. If it's a big venue type thing, I stay sober. If it's a bar thing where the people are looking for something to dance to, I'll knock back a couple, let people buy me drinks, etc. etc.
If it's something like a biker bar where I might feel like I either play or get the **** beat out of me, I'll knock back more than a couple and let a friend drive me home. Those biker bar gigs scare me, man...

Here's hoping that, when you finally kill yourself in your car, that it's a quick death with no innocent lives involved.

If it's a paid gig-for-hire, nothing before the set. If I'm sitting in for fun then maybe 1 beer before, depending on the other players and the vibe.
This is my job too, but most of my time is spent in the studio, usually mine, sometimes others. Times have changed in that regard as well. I used to do sessions where the booze and weed was very often present, but these days it's more pro, more "business", and I'm glad.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy casual(not critical, decision-making)LISTENING to music with some of the rough edges rounded off(sometimes VERY well rounded off
, but playing/producing/mixing with a buzz on is just short-changing yourself and everybody else involved.

Depends on the gig .... if it's the classic rock band doing one of our routine restaurant dates I'll have a drink after set-up and probably another one during the course of the night. If my wife is with me, maybe a 3rd when we're done for the night, then she'll drive home (assuming she hasn't had a drink herself).
More "serious" gigs, I never drink at all. If the date involves a lot of sight-reading or improvization, the alcohol messes me up way too much ....
I take no chances driving after drinking. It's just not worth a loss of license & insurance premiums, and it's way too dangerous.

nothing before the first set, then I have a pint of water with ice for during the 1st set, then I have a pint of lager at half time and maybe one during the second set... then as many as I can drink afterwards
if I have any more during the gig, then it usually takes the edge off the music..
I have no problem with drinking beer during a show otherwise... we play in pubs, and landlords hire us because they think they'll get more beer-drinking people in the pub than if they didn't have us... it's good-time getting-drunk music, so I'm sure the example we set by drinking beer on stage doesn't harm the landlord's takings... I wouldn't drink at a gig if I felt it was inappropriate
