I think my first 'performance' was aged about 14 or something at my school. I think my first gig in a bar I was 16, being a guitard. I used to consider myself able to play both, these days I realise I couldn't play either instrument. Now its just bass really =)
I was about 16. I don't have photos, but I do have some from about a year later. I'll have to scan and post one.
well I played trombone in a brass quartet in 4th grade. We did chirstmas songs. Does that count? Playing bass I was 13 and played during lunch at school with a broken hand. Good thing the band sucked!

First gig playing for the old folks home--rocked those old people with Winchester Catherdral and Love Potion #9!
First paying gig was on bass at age 19 playing bass ever since. Could never really go back to the guitar after learning how to lay down the low end. Seemed somehow anti-climatic.
Of course, the improvement in groupies between the two gigs didn't hurt!

I was 11 as far as I can remember, I was a guitar player back then. 5 of us (4 students and our guitar teacher) were on a fancy stage of a fancy hall on an evening which our school has organized. That adrenaline and excitement starting from half an hour before the show was addictive

I was probably around 16 years old or so. Was a blast. That was in school for some event. Now first paying bar gig was around 18 or so. We had a two piece band (my drummer and me on guitar). I always liked bass better than guitar but unless you're playing some sort of extacy dance party I don't think drums and a bass would entertain most bar folk.
When I was 13, sometime mid-last century, I played bass in a band with my older brother's friends, and the first gig I did with them was at my Jr Hi for a school dance. I was the coolest 7th grader on the planet for a day! I then spent the next several years lying about my age so we could play bars (drinking age was only 18 at the time, and I was tall enough to pass).
I was also fortunate enough to have a vocal music instructor that was just facinated by the fact that one of her students was playing bass--not too common back then. So she worked the bass into any arrangement she could, and I got lots of stage time.
Now, of course, kid bass players are a dime-a-dozen...

First gig at 44: house parties and open mics..
First pay gig 45: We played a dive bar in a bad part of town. Got paid $15 each then found out someone stole the trunk emblem from my car which cost $20 to replace, so I made $5 on the night..... wait a tick, forgot about gas -- scratch that, I' haven't played for money yet.

I was 15 when I first started playing legitimate gigs on bass.

I was 13. Played at a local coffee shop with my Thrash Metal band (Black Gauntlet. Shameless plug: Link Removed)
The first real show I played was at a near-by YMCA Teen Center where we invited a bunch of popular local metalcore bands. Kids went nuts for the thrash.

I played bass in a school jazz band at 10, (and still do today) but played my first real gig at 15 with one of my friends at a local coffe shop. It spurred a short lived and eventful tour
