"Overview:

Custom PAE Kernel:
At the heart of AV Linux is a customized i686 2.6.31.12-rt21 Linux Kernel that features "realtime" preemption, 1000hz Timer and PAE (Physical Address Extension) support. This means that even though it is a 32 bit Operating System it is not limited to 4GB of RAM, in fact it can utilize up to 64GB of RAM! This has been done in consideration of those with newer systems many of which come routinely with more than 4GB of RAM. As I mentioned in post #65 AV Linux 3 lacked support for Wi-Fi cards that rely upon the zd1211rw module which has been included in many mainstream Linux kernels for a good two years now. AV Linux 4.0 also lacks said module.

I blacklisted the rt2x00usb, rt2x00lib, and rt2800usb drivers as per peepingtom's instructions and got the AirLink101 AWLL6080 to function properly.

Linux has few real threats. Rootkits are chief amongst them:

Along with rkhunter, chkrootkit is another Terminal application worth installing and using on a regular basis.

As well, clamtk (in concert with the rest of ClamAV) can scan .zip files etc one downloads from the Internet. *ClamAV's main target are Windows viruses which could infect dual-boot PC's or be passed along to Windows machines.

All of these can be found in System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager.

*ClamAV can also be found in Ubuntu Software Center as 'Virus Scanner' and is available for Windows too.

I'm surprised that something as useful as Ubuntu Tweak (amongst its many other features it can put 10.04's window buttons back on the right-hand-side) isn't in the Ubuntu Repositories. Perhaps later on it will be. But for now...

BTW. According to ClamAV (Virus definitions 22 Jun 2010) ubuntu-tweak_0.5.4.1-1_all.deb is clean.

Tried to install this today. I didn't get the option to not install the audio applications. It hung on the uploading the last package (#1383). Is that the error you got when you installed with the audio applications? If so, where do you go to uncheck the audio applications?

This is a great resource!

When you get to this point during the installation of Ubuntu Studio 9.10, just make sure the 'Audio creation and editing suite' is not selected. (Up & down arrow keys navigate, <Space Bar> selects & de-selects)

(The 'Audio creation and editing suite' includes WINE which in turn includes the ttf-mscorefonts-installer which must be downloaded from Source Forge.

If the PC that Ubuntu Studio 9.10 is being installed upon does not have an Internet connection, then the ttf-mscorefonts-installer can't be accessed and the install will fail, thus the work-around outlined in the OP.)
