Huge classic hits, but rarely or never covered

I think I remember doing Drown in My Own Tears on solo acoustic at some point. But yeah, I can't think of any band I've heard cover a Smithereens song. And they are perfect cover band songs, IMO.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Looks like lots of bands cover Smithereens. Must be a regional thing(?). I'm originally from the West.

I've always been a fan of acoustic versions of band songs. My friend and I do a 80/90s acoustic duo (guitar and mandolin). We do Don't Dream It's Over, Friday I'm in Love, With or Without You, and Hurt So Good, among others. Hurt So Good goes over pretty well. I would do Your Love in a hearbeat, but I'm a cursed baritone.

Saw this guy at a friend's house party years ago doing Your Love. It was amazing, but I can't find a recording of it. This will have to do.

It was huge back then, but seems to be almost forgotten today, plus the vocal harmonies would make it difficult to cover. The early 90s had quite a bit of stuff like this.

It may have been a hit, but it was not huge. The a cappella version may have been as big if not bigger than the band remix. As a "one hit wonder" group, without the dancing and stage presence many of their contemporaries had a ballad from them it may have been a street corner song for vocal groups or an audition song for singing contest but not something individuals or bands used.

I really shouldn't be arguing about things like this on the Internet, but 8 weeks at number 2 on Billboard while "I Will Always Love You" was number 1... not bad.

Years ago , one of my bands worked our butts off to cover Jethro Tulls "Aqualung." Played it out once to absolute crickets. Never tried it again. Somebody a ways back mentioned Warren Zevon. We used to open every show with "When Johnny Strikes Up The Band." Also played "Werewolves of London" and "Lawyers , Guns and Money." All were pretty well received.
