I agree, but you have to look at what it is we are looking to copy. The only notable person using this pedal on bass is Muse. They were the first, and are still the only mainstream group that uses it.
Of course it will sound like them, and only them until someone else uses it and makes it big. I use mine all over the place in my original act, and I love it. I use it for covers too. The thing I really like about it is that it is clear, and hi-fi sounding (not muddy or muffled) but dirty. It plays very well with guitarists. The tone is in the right spot to allow distortion and still allow the guitarist to have his own sonic room. Blended with clean, it is an eargasm of tone.
But it all really depends on what you are looking for. I am on a new kick, chasing the Circa Survive tone on "Imaginary Enemy". Ironically, it is almost exact with the animato/clean blend. I am on the hunt for a big box Rat from pre 2001. I know the tone characteristics are close to the same, but once I get a Rat, I'll do another video comparison between them to show how different they really are.
I personally have never been a fan of light OD or even light distortion, because it never seemed to translate well with distorted guitars. At least for me, in rock. I also, dislike the low-fi sounds some pedals get (Hematoma without mods). I like a little treble zing in the path, and super dark OD just doesn't punch through. My pedulla already has a little crunch to it.
As for the clone, as I said before, the pedal dimed sounds like the settings you get with a real animato setup like Wolstenholmes. At least, it does for me, but we all know how close our rigs are to each others. I think others will love it, but it really depends on what they want to use it for.
