After years of not being allowed to, or being heavily discouraged from playing my bass in the house my wife told me I should play my instrument. Here’s the kicker, it has to be in the living room while she is in there watching television. No amp. No thanks. Everything will get donated to the local high school that has a great music department in September when school starts. Anybody else been pushed away from playing by a significant other?
Sorry dude. But you don't need to be on talk bass. You and your wife need to talk...

My wife has "never" discouraged me from playing. In fact, quite the opposite! Don't quite know how I would have handled that demand? Probably not so well! It's kinda like telling her that you don't approve of her doing something she loves to do. I guess I'd have to get em out of her purse and tell her to go somewhere for a couple of hours so I could practice. Not to be rude but, it seems pretty selfish to me. Sorry for your delema!

Been there done that, although not to the degree of being forbidden to play. My ex attempted to be controlling, saying my being in my music room was the same as me not being home at all, all the while, she would spend hours per day away from home training for her triathlon stuff.

It took a very short time for me to say “screw that”.

If this is a real thread, and not just a troll, then you need to go first thing Monday morning and file for divorce, it is not normal, or okay, or “just how she is”. She is manipulating you until she is done with you, then SHE will divorce YOU.

Sadly, such relationships are kind of common.
But that doesn't make them healthy, or "normal"... UNLESS both people LIKE it this way, I guess.
I've met plenty of people who are not happy unless someone or something else identifiable is "making them miserable"... as if it provides them with meaning and context, the challenge againt which they struggle in the drama they write in their heads.
I don't understand this, but I have seen it.
I could not live like that.

I hope he's just trolling.
I think it's real. Marriage can be very difficult. At times my wife has been quite awful. At times I was a nightmare.
The only way out of these dark times is to push through. It helps to have common goals like raising great kids and eventual retirement.
Although I set my foot down about music a long time ago. "You will have to pry this bass from my cold dead fingers".
Try it!

Sorry for your circumstance. I don’t think you’ll get an extra life where you will be free to play your bass when and where you want, so you might want to evaluate your life’s priorities and adjust appropriately.
