Since I found the right fruitcake (actually date-nut cake) and the right brown 'n' serve rolls, all is right with the world indeed! Next year, I'll bake myself some gingerbread loaf, too. I know there's still time this year, but I'm too lazy to go back out and get the mix.

The King's Hawaiian ones are too sweet for me. I like the potato dinner rolls, though. I think Colombo is the specific brand I buy.

In a manner of speaking, yes. If they're baked perfectly, they pull apart at the 'seams,' thus enabling you to use more butter than you would with a normal sort of roll. Perhaps the wheat farmers were in cahoots with the dairy farmers when this got thought of.

Thanks for starting this thread. I pointed some out to my wife and she got them for our Christmas dinner. We both had enjoyed them as we were growing up.

So far I've only tried the buttermilk ones, and they're just as I remember! They brown perfectly; crispy top, soft but not doughy inside, they tear apart nicely, they were made for butter/margarine, and they taste soooo good!!! I will accept no substitutes from now on!

I had to settle for Randy's Bi Lo Grocery Store Bakery rolls like these on the bottom row. They are good but not like the brown and serve rolls.

Walmart makes their own version of the Hawaiian dinner rolls. They are not bad and cost less than King's. King's are the best though.

I noticed that the "Homestyle Buttermilk Rolls" have less calories, less sodium, and less sugars than the "Flaky Gem Rolls".
