He said he went straight through Paypal, though, which to me says he transacted outside of Reverb. Maybe he'll come back and clarify that.
Well that suxs..... But thinking it thru..... and we're all guilty of it to some extent. "Greed" did ya in. You can afford that bass, but ya wanted a deal. Now getting it for a couple hundred off the list price is a deal, but HALF off???? Thats a sign that something aint right. Even if the company and the bass is legit. HALF OFF???? Its either stolen, or has serious structural issues (needs a new neck).

In that case, Reverb should be able to help you, even if it's only going to bat for you with PayPal.

I bought a Squire P bass (Wentz signature) on Reverb for a few hundred dollars less than the one or two others that were on the market at the time. I actually got the bass, but it had a twisted neck that made it unusable.
Fortunately, I had a spare Squier neck, so I was able to use the rest of the bass, so I didn't get stung in that regard. But still. It pays to be wary of incredibly good deals.

The easiest people to scam are the ones that think you can get something for nothing.
I wrote them while in a meeting (i have 4hrs of meetings today), but here is the gist of the conversation.
So whether you buy off a seller on the side by PAYPAL, or you buy using Paypal through REVERB, no difference. Obviously I didn't know that, "Buyer beware" and good to know. So that's it. I will update once Paypal gets back to me, but if anyone reading this didn't know, now you do and wanted to share. Take care of each other out there!

I bought a bass from an acct that is fraudulent, it was closed and they reopened one etc.
Anyways, I was told that Reverb couldn't do anything because I bought with Paypal, but i bought the bass through REVERB using PAYPAL

Eric, my colleague was correct. As this was a PayPal only payment, the only way to reclaim the payment, is to open a dispute via PayPal.

We do not have access to PayPal's transactions, and they are processed by them solely, so in order to open a dispute on this transaction, you will need to open a claim with them.

You are still protected by us, however as the payment has been processed and handled via PayPal they will need to be contacted to complete the claim and dispute.
I realise the process is frustrating, but they are the ones that processed and handled the funds for this purchase, and they will be able to assist with this claim.
PayPal has their own policies and are quite strict with handling their own claims, and indeed if payments are made via Reverb Payments (aka CC or purchasing from sellers that have Reverb Payments enabled) we 100% have more access to those transactions in those cases
Sorry if I sounded pushy, I do not want to come off as rude, but I just wanted to confirm that there is no real benefit to using REVERB if I have to pay through Paypal as REVERB can't do anything, right?
I am asking because if I decide to use REVERB again, I will ensure that I only pay by CC. No Paypal ever.

Reverb has it's own payment service , had the seller been using that .. I think you would be protected.
As an occasional seller on reverb, I sold an item a customer was not happy with and they refunded the person and for some reason never billed me. I was banned from selling on Reverb until I contacted them and they explained the situation. I had to pay them for the refund and they reinstated me.

I too fell for this on Reverb last week. Also a new Fender (Jazz). After trying to contact the seller the next day, saw that his account was disabled and could not accepted messages, I contacted PayPal. Seller got back to them with tracking info so they wouldn't deny him payment.
I did not receive the shipment and called UPS about it. They said that a shipment was sent w a 1 lbs box to a different address than mine with no recipient name on the label.
I gave this information to PayPal and they refunded me.
Wow, I’ve bought at least 50 basses through Reverb and never had such an issue.
I once received a bass with a soft case rather than a hard case as advertised. I was refunded my purchase price, shipping and return shipping.
However, this was when Reverb was owned by CME. Looks like since ETSY bought it things have changed?

After dwelling on this some more ETSY must have changed things because sellers wouldn’t get their money right away until Reverb got their percentage and the buyer clicked on ‘received’. The money delay was 10 to 14 days when Reverb was owned by CME.
That would have made it impossible for the fraudulent seller to get his cash and close out his account.
