That's cool! I don't like black basses with rosewood or other brown wood for the fingerboard. My brain tells me that it's the same faux pas as wearing brown shoes with black pants. Otherwise black is great with a maple neck.

+1 - something that makes me nutty with some Musicman basses...some of those finishes just scream for an ebony board rather than the brown of the RW that just clashes so hard to me..

I've had a number of black and white basses. White either gets damaged and looks bad, or, weathers and looks good (to some), but they can lose their pristine-ness easily which for me is a main attraction. Black can get smudgey but is not an issue for me as I keep mine clean.

After having White/Maple P, Black/Maple J, and my current ex-White/Ebony G&L, I prefer black with ebony fretboards and matching headstocks (which I seem to go on about a lot in forums and FB Bass groups). I wish I could get a Jazz with those options that were not at Custom Shop prices.

Also remember that black appears smaller which is an attraction to some as some basses like a J hang pretty far down your leg.

If I were in a PF tribute band I'd get a Black/Maple P, but otherwise have not been a maple neck player for years. Prefer Ebony then Rosewood.

For me it's the opposite as with cars (I've owned 3 black and 1 white) - white for cars (safer), black for bass (slightly smaller looking).

All my basses are black and it is my firts choice, open to other colors except red, I don't know why but I can't stand red basses, nothing wrong with them just not for me.

I've probably had more black basses than any other colour, pretty much by chance really, but I do like 'em and can't see why anyone wouldn't...

The first bass I bought new was supposed to be a sunburst/tort/rosewood jazz bass so I could be like Mel Schacher. When it arrived, the head stock was broken off (no marks on the shipping carton!) just above the nut. I was tired of waiting and accepted a black one with a blocked maple neck. I traded it for a '63 Thunderbird and that was my last black bass. Transparent black is the only black finish that I care for...

...but have no plans to part with either of these. Been a sunburst fan for close to 25 years, and have never really been into black, but recently things changed and I came across these. The MIM Classic 70's was just a killer deal that fell into my lap, and after selling my 3TSB w/ tort American Standard P I couldn't help but get the Classic 50's lacquer.

Those are both really nice looking basses, especially that P bass, what's with the pickguard, one ply and stock? I really like the looks of that pickguard.

It's gold anodized, 100% stock. Attached some pics of it after I installed covers and a tug bar. The covers don't get int he way at all because I play with fingers well above the pickguard.

I actually ended up selling the Classic 70's Jazz. Just couldn't bond with the skinny Jazz neck and prefer the MUCH wider 1 3/4" nut width of the Classic 50's P.
