I don't trust people who play close to the bridge as their default tone.
Mainly between the bridge and bridge pickup, closer to the pickup, itself... rarely ever at neck pickup. Maybe for single note walks, but not runs... I find the strings 'bounce' too much, making them harder to control.
You must play a little more physical like me. I'm all over the place but have to watch myself the closer my plucking gets to the neck because of that added "bounce" you speak of.
I play in between the two pickups now. I find it gets me the widest tonal range. I used to be a Jaco, Jeff Berlin kind of guy and play near the bridge pickup but got tired of the thin sound and hard feel.
Tone is in the fingers.
Depends on the song and what sound you're trying to get. With my PJ, I can go from the darkest, fattest tone (P-pickup, tone off, play fingerstyle near neck), to the brightest, twangiest tone (J-bridge pickup only, play with a pick near the bridge)

My understanding is that that's what floating thumb is. Maybe I have the term wrong.Mainly between the bridge and bridge pickup, closer to the pickup, itself... rarely ever at neck pickup. Maybe for single note walks, but not runs... I find the strings 'bounce' too much, making them harder to control... No floating thumb, as I use it to quiet other strings.
I actually thought more people would talk me down and give me reasons to go bridge. If you don't like it, don't do it.
Why the need for affirmation?
Craven human.
