I don't want this nickname

I have recently joined a band. It's the kind of band which is basically run by one guy, who is the songwriter, singer, rhythm guitarist and manager. Literally within seconds, he had nicknamed me "Mr Bass". He uses this nickname frequently, presumably in the hope that it will catch on. When I turn up at the start of each practise session: "Aha! Mr Bass!" In his email address book I am Stylon "Mr Bass" Pilson. The poor drummer is similarly afflicted with a "Mr Beat" moniker that seems to be used by only one person.

How should I deal with this? Direct confrontation runs the risk of causing offence, but the "war of attrition" method (ie refuse to adopt the nickname, in the hope that he tires of using it) does not guarantee success (cf the drummer's situation).

Ideas?

S.P.

everytime he says mr. bass, say "stylon, please", politely. :).

yah

when I used to give our screamer a ride....he would run out to get in the car and yell....."Al Baby!" lets go make some music!

so it stuck...

now, Mr Bass is not bad

but, if you dont like it, just walk him outside, or approach him when he is alone, and just say "hey listen, can you just call me steve, -or whatever you want to be called- instead of
Mr Bass?

two options!

1) he says ok, and apologizes, and complies with your request.

2) everything else

if option 2 comes up.....

then I would find out, -talk to his signifiacant other or anyone who knows him really really well- what his weak spot is, what he hates...

thennnnnnnnnnn

oh boy, he would be called that every thirty seconds.

----my friend, very proud guy, was bustin on me--- he own a pizza shop.....I called him pizza boy.....o yes, he was not happy , and I rode that one out for a while....

so, let us know how you do!

big al

aka

Al Baby Love!

Stylon-
Embrace you new Moniker!! Be the best Mr. Bass that he's ever known.
He probably just finds it easier than remembering names.
The Second Agreement: Don't Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering

+ 1 to that ....very good advice....

Capt N Dink -----that sounds bad!

I hate to hijack this thread, but I would like to share my nickname story. My band is guest band on a radio station program called "Hometown Hereoes." It's a radio show that plays local talent.

So anyway, we're getting ready to perform live and the host wants a level check from me. So I just play first note of the song we going to perform because I hate when bands get on stage and make a bunch of ruckus before playing. Anyway, everyone laughs and our singer says, "way to go Johnny one-note." Ya, you guessed it; I'm now Johnny one-note. But I only get called it once in a while and only in jest.

lol wow. this is great

well my nickname is "bart" and my wife hates it. she refuses to call me by my nickname and makes fun of the people who gave it to me. personally i dont care. but if i did, i would tell them that i dont like it. if some **** head gets mad cause you dont like his nickname for you then screw him. but if he does get mad, that will be an example of how he handles the rest of the band. its stupid to throw a fit every time time you dont get your way.

my guirtards are trying to stick me with "the toad" :scowl:

so, mr bass aint bad at all... besides, if he calls you mr bass and the drummer mr beat i assume is due to some fantasy about "instrumentalize" people...

"yes baby, i have an appointment with mr beat and mr bass to ROCK OUT my latest hit "

One of our dep drummers got the nickname "Shrek".

One night he made a serious tactical error by saying to the whole band, "I hope you don't call me Shrek because you think that I look like him!"

How we laughed. Poor fella. :D

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. Where they haven't been helpful, they've at least been entertaining.

I've decided that I'm just going to relax and accept the nickname. Maybe one day it will be superseded by something else, maybe it will even grow on me. In the meantime, I've updated his entry in my email address book so that his new middle name is 'Mr Guitar', and when he greets me as 'Mr Bass' I will greet him back accordingly.
