I Feel Like A Dinosaur

The last few days, I have been listening to the new albums by Solange and Derrick Hodge. I love the music, but I really a generational musical shift in the foundation of popular music. The funk and rock that grounded me really are passé. Solange is using live musicians, but in a post hip hop and (D'Angelo) Voodoo way. As for Derrick Hodge, he just strikes me as a very confident composer who feels none of the pressure to be flashy that the great players of my generation had. To top it off, I think it may be time to stick a fork in slap, no matter how much I personally love it.

That just sounds like personal preference because Louis Johnson was at his peak while Marcus Miller was just beginning to make history. Nobody even knew who Victor Wooten was!

You're not alone. I feel like dinosaur because of the type music I like (r&b 60s-80s). Musicians and singers of such seems to all but disappeared. Not necessarily to play in a R&B band again but to see a good show with decent musicians w/o concert prices. (good locals).

The radio stations I listen to never add new songs, never!
There once was a hip station that played stuff like Chevelle, Machine Head, or Volbeat, but now they only play 80's pop.

Derrick Hodge sounds very stripped down and ambiance driven. That's happening in rock as well.
I don't get Solange. I saw her performance on SNL and found her music boring. The physical energy exerted during the performance was inconsistent with the slow, repetitive song.

Same here. I realized a few years ago that I had lost all contact with contemporary pop/rock/R&B. I follow jazz and some roots stuff, that's it. Maybe half of the music I buy is reissues. I'm an old guy, time for them younguns to step up to the plate.

I'm a geezer, but I try and keep up with current music, even really pop stuff. What I find so sad is in "pop" music--y'know songs that are hits - - for the most part the writing is tepid and just plain boring and most of all, really lazy. I started paying attention to music in the 70's as a kid and, man, you could have a huge hit with a really interesting chord change, structure, whatever. The songs had an arc, with bridges and (god forbid) actual choruses that are more than just the millennial whoop being sung over the same chords as the verse. It's pathetic.
We had pop radio on in the car the other day (my 11 year old sometimes goes there) and I swear 3 songs in a row had the exact same chord structure, and the same "no chorus" arrangement. So effing lazy!
There you have it---I'm a Rantosaurus . . .
