I Feel Like A Dinosaur

My Nephew is just starting college and his own school used to be quite a frequent source of work for my old college band for parties and school related events when I was his age. So I asked if there have been live bands at the parties he's gone to and he said "nobody hires bands for school parties, they all get DJ's". Sadly the world of music in that regard has indeed changed quite a bit!

Derrick Hodge sounds very stripped down and ambiance driven. That's happening in rock as well.
I don't get Solange. I saw her performance on SNL and found her music boring. The physical energy exerted during the performance was inconsistent with the slow, repetitive song.

The Solange record works well. I thought her choreography was goofy. I guess ambient is a great word for Derrick Hodge.

I feel I am just following the natural order of things. I played popular music back in its day. I kept playing it and adding a little here and there. Eventually, my music should be a hit at the senior center when I get there. I think I will go with pterodactyl. Spelled funny and such a cool dinosaur!! You were giving us a choice, right?

We ARE dinosaurs. Them's the facts. It is amazing and somewhat bewildering that the music of the 60's/70's has stayed so foundational and relevant for so long.
As far as slap - it's a sound. Sometimes it fits. I haven't slapped in about 5 years - no need. Got sent a tune to record a bass part for yesterday, and it just calls for that sound, so I'll slap.
Support the music, do what the song calls for.

I'm also a dinosaur but, music is music. I will have a go at any of the modern pop songs on the radio today. What's so difficult about these songs? I know a lot of these pop songs use computerized or keyboard bass but, so what, learn to improvise. Either you're a bass player or you're not. No excuses, just play the instrument.

There's a depressing amount of sameness for me in a lot of the new band music I'm hearing thses days. I wonder if there's an official cookbook or formula they're using…

And that: "Woa-0h-A-oh!" in all those faux choruses has got to stop. It's as clichéd as the old disco drum's Doo! Doo! Doo!

The last few days, I have been listening to the new albums by Solange and Derrick Hodge. I love the music, but I really a generational musical shift in the foundation of popular music. The funk and rock that grounded me really are passé. Solange is using live musicians, but in a post hip hop and (D'Angelo) Voodoo way. As for Derrick Hodge, he just strikes me as a very confident composer who feels none of the pressure to be flashy that the great players of my generation had. To top it off, I think it may be time to stick a fork in slap, no matter how much I personally love it.

uhhhh....
