I Feel Like A Dinosaur

The last few days, I have been listening to the new albums by Solange and Derrick Hodge. I love the music, but I really a generational musical shift in the foundation of popular music. The funk and rock that grounded me really are passé. Solange is using live musicians, but in a post hip hop and (D'Angelo) Voodoo way. As for Derrick Hodge, he just strikes me as a very confident composer who feels none of the pressure to be flashy that the great players of my generation had. To top it off, I think it may be time to stick a fork in slap, no matter how much I personally love it.
I saw Solange on the Tonight Show the other day and the band was....tepid

I love lots of stuff from before I was born, and some new stuff, too. But I do wonder if something isn't wrong with our culture. Mustang Sally will soon be a half-century old. One of you dinosaurs tell me: in 1967, how many bar/dance bands were playing hits from World freakin' War One???

Seems like we've gotten a bit stagnant.

Depends. If you're having fun playing with whatever technique you use at the time...

I typically play fingerstyle these days but I play in whatever fashion I deem appropriate. That's up to me. I'm having fun more often than not and don't concern myself with how others do what they do. It's a great position to be in. Give it a try.

I wasn't going to post this... this is an idea that came to me last night so I recorded a scratch take to my cellphone so I'd remember it, warts and all. It was fun and maybe someday it'll part of a composition, maybe not. Probably not anyone's idea of "standard" slap.

There is more music being released than ever before. So if you can't find something you like, then you aren't looking hard enough.
There is a virtual deluge and therin lies the issue. I live in a smallish southern city and the radio stations don't play anything new I'm interested in listening to. I don't have time to root through Sirius to find good stuff. It's a dilemma. I try watching the festival stuff featuring new bands and frankly hear nothing that makes me want to buy.

I feel the same with slap, thought I personally loath it. Hate the sound.
Maybe some organized protests against slap?

Commercials use old music because old folks have larger incomes.

That's right. EVERY OLD PERSON HAS LOTS OF CASH.

Cause it's so old, it's public domain now.

Possibly. I still contend that it's because the music is excellent. There is a lot of great new music. I'm just not partial to it.

Uh.....because every other commercial is for a Lincoln that old people drive, or a drug that old people take, or a cruise line old people use, or a sale at JC Penny young people would never go to, or a restaurant only families like mine or old people go to. That's why they all have old music in them.

(P.S. I'm 45 and love classic rock. I'm just stating the facts.)

This is the one I love.
ONLY OLD PEOPLE DRIVE LINCOLNS.
ONLY OLD PEOPLE USE PHARMACEUTICAL DRUGS.
ONLY OLD PEOPLE GO ON CRUISE LINES.
ONLY OLD PEOPLE GO TO J.C. PENNY. YOU WOULD NEVER SEE A YOUNG PERSON THERE.
ONLY FAMILIES AND OLD PEOPLE GO TO RESTAURANTS THAT PLAY OLD MUSIC.

Sorry chap but your reality of facts doesn't seem match up with mine.
I work with a lot of young people and they happen to love 80's music.
Just stating the facts. :)

I was newer r&b for the longest. Awhile back I listened to this group called the foreign exchange and they gave me hope. Their album in the land of milk and honey changed me. Give them a listen doc. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Yeah, Darion Alexander is a great player!

I don't know. Cranes In The Sky by Solange could easily have been on a Yusef Lateef album in the 1970s. Detroit jazz-funky.

There's always Snarky Puppy, Progger, Liquid Soul, or Rival Sons.

No, you missed the point. Most of the COMMERCIALS for drugs are geared toward older people and the drugs used by them.

A many of the COMMERCIALS involving JC Penny and chain restaurants and resorts/cruises (like Sandals) are aimed at older people.

And most young folks don't go to Golden Corral or drive Lincolns.

Those are the facts on the ground. If the young people where you live drive Lincolns, use tones of pharmaceutical products, take Sandals or Norwegian cruises and eat at Golden Corral, THEY are the exception. Because most don't. You live in a weird vacuum.

Just because some kid you know digs vintage Madonna, that doesn't change the marketing campaigns on Madison Avenue. Viagra and K&W Cafeteria and Cadillac ad campaigns aren't aimed at your neighbor's kid.
