I too had to sell nearly all my gear, amps, a PA, basses and some really nice guitars. It was me who had the health issue - I fell down a few stairs and was paralysed for a few months - 8 years on now and not perfect, but I’ll do.

I kept a bass I had made for me and a 6 string, though I’ve since built up a bit of a collection of instruments that are at least playable and sound right for recording. Just built myself a ‘parr’s’ JB too, which is delicious tbh. Very happy with that, and a Steinberger Spirit 5 amply handles the lowest of lows.

I am going to check out the EBMM Ray Special 4H to see what you like about it so much. Best wishes for your family.

All I can say is...play one.
If you can't get your hands on one I can try to explain why I love the Ray Special so much.
The fit & finish are just second to none. Everything about this instrument screams quality and attention to detail. For a production instrument its amongst the best.
Ergonomics and Sound are ultimately why this is my one.
I'm taking a minimalist approach to things and if I can't get the sound I want w/my Ray and Darkglass rig...then I don't want that sound.
Ultimately though I just didn't want to play any other bass.
