I HATE PCs SO MUCH!!!

my current laptop, cost me less than $1100 brand new in december.

dual core 2.6 ghz
4 gig 667 ram
350 gig 7200 harddrive
1920x1200

here's a mac with the same loadout (mine lacks only the firewire 400 out, does have the 800, and my harddrive is bigger)...

over 3 times the price. epic FAIL. do you have any idea the kind of pc laptop i could get for $3400 ?

though i did agree with you to some extent here...i must say you can't just look at specs alone....there are many other things like design...ease of use...efficiency...etc...

to me my macbook just "works" better then any pc i've been on...

kinda like my good ole $1,100 american fender jazz "works better" then most fancy basses with better specs....

A Mac can't work better for you than a PC. That's just self delusion. You havn't been reading the thread. Now, I can't speak for John, but i'd imagine his response to you claiming a Mac could work better than a PC would be something like this:

look, i understand. you signed up for the steve jobs lifetime supply of mac koolaid, and don't want to question your "investment" so that's cool. if i spent two grand on a 400 computer with a cute light-up logo and the personal guarantee of half of silicon valley that i was now ubercool, i'd resent any implications to the contrary too.

But, what would I know, I'm delusional too*! :D

*Even though i'm typing this post on a PC

is there a benchmarking program that works on both macs and pcs? i use 3dmark06 for all my machines, but i don't know if that works on a mac.

as for ease of use, design, efficiency - those seem pretty subjective to me. i spent a while trying to understand os10, and have a decent working relationship, albeit an uncomfortable one. i don't like how macs want to hide everything that is going on, everything that happens "behind the scenes", assuming that it knows better than me what i want access to.

i resent the fact that mac specifically gimped their agp ports with a useless mobo-bound power port to -force- folks to use special mac-branded video cards that are about 50% more expensive. there's no reason to do this - they could have just as easily used the same method that pc's use, which is have the additional power required for the card come from a socket attachment, which would open up their customers to the possibility of all agp cards.

i resent the fact that, on my G4 mdd, everything else, with the exception of the ram, is proprietary, and intended to be changed/upgraded only by Qualified Apple Drones at $120 bucks an hour. that wasn't the way apple used to be - i used to jack around with my apple ][e a lot, had a z80 board in there, doubled the ole 64 k ram with an expansion card.

that's cool, though. folks dig apples, and hey, i'm glad for that. maybe someday i'll dig em again too, when they get back to offering something the opposition doesn't have, for a reasonable price.

but let's get back to the original issue here - folks were repeatedly bringing up how "buy a mac" is a valid response to "wah my computer is messed up fromz t3h int3rw3bz". this is not the proper response.

Yeah, Windows is way too vulnerable, I was on win since 1995-2003/2004 (XP Pro was the last one I used, started on NT/NT4 back in the days) and the last two years there, my life was hell to keep up the guards, and then I went over to Mac and started using OS X 2003/2004, since then:

Stats
------
Virus - 0
Malware - 0
System Crashes - 0
Format C: - 0
35 + seconds startup time - 0

I am a happy guy now, and my macbook starts on 12 seconds (from pushing the button, to loaded os x with network up and running), so Microsoft has forever lost one user there.

Though for windows systems, a fully patched NT4 server, is a tank, best OS Microsoft ever had, it's just lovely!! Though not very useful as a workstation.

i'd rather not be cheated into spending money on anything i don't need or want, to be honest, and that includes an extra $2000 for a mac logo and one less button on my mouse. :).

This is what makes me think that you simply don't have much Mac experience. Macs have come with FOUR button mice for years now. And your comment about having to upgrade the BIOS on your G4 Mirror Drive Door. Macs don't have a BIOS. They use EFI. I think you meant firmware. Which would have automatically been installed through system updater.

Besides, the G4s were hardly the epitome of Macdom.

PCs are fine. I choose to use Macs because I like them better. However, I think it's important to understand both systems. That's why my MacBook runs Leopard and Windows XP.

lol. yeah, and on my g4 MDD, i haven't had any issues with compatibility because, well, nothing -runs- on a g4. it doesn't tell me that i'm having memory management issues, it just doesn't play certain tracks in protools when i try to mix them down. it doesn't tell me i need a bios upgrade, it just doesn't boot 3 times out of 4 until i figure it out.

i also love the expectation that i should be willing to pay for a new operating system every year, that i should be happy to be forced to use apple-made software or else have compatibility issues, that i should be happy spending 25-50% more money for the equivalent computer just so that steve jobs can get a custom gold-plated porshe.

yeah, macs rule.
/sarcasm

i'm responsible for 7 different pc machines in my house, along with my now-retired g4 1.25 mdd, and none of them have any aftermarket spyware/virus protection on them for bootup. i have a hardware firewall and use defender, and i have a program that detects and disables key loggers, one for root kits, and one i wrote on my own in about a half hour that helps me clean up my registry. imagine that - being able to actually write a program easily that helps me keep tabs on what's going on with my own computer. like to see someone do -that- on a mac in under a week.

and i have no problems on any of my pc's. i know what's loaded on all of them, i know what loads at boot up, i know what's running during runtime, i know where to find the info i don't know about them - i understand how the registry works, i understand how the computing admin tools provided in the operating system work. it wasn't hard to learn.

I used to be like that, then I stumbled over OS X, now I never have to do any of that.

But I won't say mac is flawless, I have been serving some network setups at some companies with lots of macs and seen strange things happen, though most often it's based on silly things and fixed within the minute when identified.

Worst was old g3/g4 macs and hardware problems, memory curcuits, gfx cards etc. that could be really tricky to find out where the problems originated from (especially kernel panics that didn't log anything in particular).

yeah, firmware. to me that's synonymous with bios, but strictly speaking i can see how that would be wrong with a mac. my system updater didn't catch the first one i needed when i was getting os10, for whatever reason, until i got it on it's own, and that mac did not have an active internet connection while it was in use, so it did not have the capability to look up necessary updates whenever it chose.

when i got my mac, it was the top of the line offered, and it came with the clear suppository mouse. i ended up using a macally two-button+wheel mouse.

PCs are fine. I choose to use Macs because I like them better. However, I think it's important to understand both systems. That's why my MacBook runs Leopard and Windows XP.

that's fine - this whole mac/pc debate started because someone exhibiting classic case of user error was being told to buy a mac to address his user error-ness, where in reality a little bit of responsible computing would have addressed all issues easily, and probably prevented most of them.

IMO. Mac makes great hand held and laptop devices. But for anything that sits on a desk, you can't beat the customizability of a PC. I own a Macbook PRO and I love it along with my Iphone.

I keep hearing people talking about having to "buy" stuff to protect a PC... Firefox and it's plug-ins are free and there are many great FREE anti-spyware and anti-virus programs, I have yet to pay to keep my PC safe.. rofl.

Apple desktops are more like an appliance, they are hard to upgrade (hardware) and the parts are expensive..

I actually, until this thread, had no idea what the prices were on macbook airs. Holy crap, what a ripoff. Hey, let's downgrade every single function of this computer, but make it thin, and charge you 800 more bucks for it. Unbelievable. I don't hate macs at all, but i"m no more a fan of Apple than I am of Microsoft, that's for sure.

Like I said, evangelism is stupid. It's absolutely ridiculous to suggest to a person who's having software issues on a computer to just throw it away and buy your favorite brand. You look utterly ridiculous doing that, regardless of what product you happen to be a fan of.

I guess someone not into bass guitars would say the same about a vintage bass or a new hi tech sadowsky/fodera and more exclusive ones, "why don't you use a squier" ...

The AIR is not aimed at a budget minded target group, and that's why it works, the people who want to feel exclusive, can now do that, and dude, they indeed do ..

There's a target group for everything, and the AIR sells more than ok to a user base that also purchases iPhone, Apple TV, Time Capsule, and eventually, an iMac or a Mac Pro (with Apples Screen as well).

Stock owners happy - Go figure ...

Business is business ..

The best part of this argument is that, with boutique basses, the issue is with diminishing returns. As the price goes up, the amount additional of quaity and/or features begins to decrease. With the Macbook Air, it's diminishing everything. Smaller screen, smaller and slower hard drive, etc. There isn't a bell curve of reduced improvements; there's only one improvement, and EVERYTHING else is a downgrade.

The only added features it boasts are being light and substitutes for things that were taken away. It's worse than the most basic Macbook in every way except for weight, and it costs $700 more. That's a hell of a lot of premium to pay for a much less powerful and less functional machine that's just light. With the boutique bass, you can at least argue that you're getting extra features, even if the resulting differences are small.

The AIR is not aimed at a budget minded target group? No kidding. I wouldn't have batted an eye if it ran, say, same as a middle-of-the-pack Macbook with lower specs or something. But to be that much worse AND that much more expensive is just crazy in my eyes.

Yeah, and you quite did not understood what I was tryin to tell you, the AIR is not about more and better functions/power etc. it's just smaller, slimmer, and more expensive. As most people know nothing about bass guitars, you probably have no idea what trend oriented fat cashed people like to do with their money just to feel that they are somehow special or privileged ...

You know what the worst is?

These people, they buy it ...

Apple is the biggest personal computer marketing machine ever seen, they know more than anyone how to make computer products feel and look appealing to people not only because of how they look/feel/work, but for what the brand represents, and in the brand, even products has their status line (macbook/pro/air , three machines, made to fit a huge range of different users depending on social status/class, economy etc.).

Nice isn't it .... Who'd ever think that so much could be interpreted in a computer ...

I just love that all you Windows guys have to download and install special programs and jump through hoops to get your computers to work for extended periods of time. I have a used Powerbook G4 (400 bucks off the bay) that I bought 2 years ago that I do 90% of web surfing and emailing on (my G5 is what I do music on). It has worked fine with no problems...even after much music and porn downloading...ummm I mean, uhhh yeah...

As someone who has supported both Apple and Windows boxes... this makes me laugh.

My wifes $2000 MacBook Pro? Crashed almost as often as our (almost identical hardware) $500 Dell Vista laptop.

Spyware, viruses, all of it - believe me, Macs get it. Not quite as often, because their much smaller market share makes them a smaller target, but they aren't technologically superior and immune to it.

Spyware and virus in OS X ?

Now you must tell more about that, I'd love to hear what you got and what you found out about it!!!
