i'm sorry...i didn't realize that i had been goosing low end and cutting low mids. funny, but all this time i thought i had been doing the exact opposite.

don't use me to try and make your points. you will be severely disappointed if you do. for a guy who's as picky about what he wants as i am, my tone is extremely easy to work into a pa, and nobody on here or on my gigs should ever assume otherwise.

And being the great soundman that you are you know your tone is easy to work into a PA.

you bet, roger! if you're in the area that weekend, i'll be happy to comp you and a couple guests. won't be playing the whole show but i'll be backing up like 6 or 7 of the 10 acts. pm me if you're interested in going...

thanks Jimmy.......I'll look at travel schedule. It would be great to meet you.

Be sure to bring along a shuttlemax 12.0 for Jimmy to play through. :hiding: :D
i could do that gig with a shuttle 3/8t. ok, maybe not the 8t, but maybe so...i can barely hear myself out of my amp on bowzer gigs.

anyway, i wouldn't want anyone to put anyone out to the degree of flying cross country, especially going from arizona weather to connecticut weather, but it would be great to meet you too, roger. modulusman, jury's still out on you :D
we play there pretty often, at least once a year, sometimes twice (of course that could all change at any second but so far so good for 10 years), so you have a standing offer to bring some family and hang.

not much of a show if you like bass playing, but pretty good if you like bass singing ;)

LOL, as much as I dig technical bass playing there is a lot about that era of rock and roll that I really love. Is Dion playing with the Belmonts? A lot of people probably don't even recognize the significance of a lot of these acts. That was a precious time in rock and roll, before things got too serious. I mean it had to progress, but still it was a wonderful innocent time when rock music was just fun. I want to go to the soda shoppe and hang with the girl in the tight sweater and saddle shoes, maybe make out at the drive-in movie later if I'm lucky! Too cool Jimmy, enjoy.

right on! it's a fun time if you turn off your musician brain ;) anyway, no dion, just the belmonts.

I would also say this was a precious time in rock n roll before everybody discovered drugs...It is amazing, I am only 32 and know so many of those acts and tunes! You are right that this was an important era in rock, and Jimmy has a good gig here. Not a lot of two handed behind the back tapping, but doing the job of a bass player and getting to see the whole country in the meantime Nice! :)

And this seemingly frequent antagonism between electric bass players and live sound engineers confuses me.

For me, there is no antagonism, because I won't fight about it. However, there is often a sense of an imperious "father knows best" attitude coming from soundmen when it comes to electric bass. Soundmen will cater to the guitarists and mic their cabs, but then hand the bassist some shite DI to go straight to the board.

Unfortunately, I just don't trust a lot of soundmen to accurately render the sound of electric bass in the mix. I have heard far too many top acts in large venues with professional sound support where the bass guitar sounds just awful. It usually is:

A. too loud in the mix.
B. big-time boosted in the sub 100hz range, especially in the 60-70hz "kick-drum" and "chest thump" range so that the mids are extremely difficult to hear.
C. wooly-sounding and indistinct, hard to distinguish from the kick drum, and difficult to hear individual notes (sounds like "one-note" car sub-woofer bass).

As far as I'm concerned, the soundguy can take my signal post-pre from my amp's DI ( I use Genz Benz ShuttleMAX 6.0 and GBE750) or mic my cab. I use my amp's tone presets and I sometimes use pedals (chorus etc.).

If I use a DI straight out of my bass I can't use these different tone shapes in the house mix, plus I can't mute and tune my bass between songs. If I decide to use a chorus or overdrive, or change my EQ settings via my amp's global shape controls, it's for a reason. It's because it is part of the arrangement of the song and it is necessary for it to be heard along with the other instruments in the house mix. Going straight to the board out of the bass guitar negates this possibility.

If we as bassists got half of the consideration that guitarists do, this thread wouldn't be nearly as long as it is. I just ask that the sound that comes out of my amp is the sound that the audience hears. I'm willing to change EQ's to help the mix. I'm willing to play the volume that is needed and nothing more. I'm less willing to cut out half of my tonal signal chain by using a DI straight out of the bass.

I understand where you're coming from, but I think the problem is, not every bassists tone comes from their amp. For many bassists, their amp is just a 'make loud box'. Guitar amp however are an integral part of their tone.

However, this does stem from:
a) Lack of communication between both parties, you really need to reinforce the fact that the amp in integral too your tone, which leads to...
b) Some sound guys are lazy/old fashioned in their approach. A lot of old school guys think that all bass should sound the same, a Fender P or J through a DI box.

Unfortunately for them, the world has moved on, I actually think the bass world is more technology advanced than guitarists, in general. We're more open to embracing new things and ideas and these days there's more to bass tone than a DI'd Fender.

I often wonder if guitars were called 'trebles' it would be a different story!

As ever, you need to discuss your options with the engineer. By all means take his qualified advice and opinion, but you should be able to make your own voice heard and he/she should be open to embrace that if they are good at their job, it is your gig and your sound after all. All down to communication. But steaming in a complaining about rubbish setup and sound isn't going to get you anywhere.

Often a happy medium will have to suffice.

i thought you were in scottsdale and were flying back to meet with family or something...never mind, then...well in that case, come on out!

modulus, about every 5-6 years we've done a tour of montana, wyoming, and the dakotas, and we played the university in bozeman twice now. last one was 5 years ago so we're overdue. don't think it'll happen this year, though...we're still smarting from the huge drives ;)
