I have a problem with cover/tribute bands.

Just to clarify, my post just above wasn't of the gauntlet throwing variety. I was simply curious after 12 pages of discussion what kind of music we were talking about here to put the whole conversation into a meaningful context.

I assume that some people are like me and some people are not. You seem to assume that nearly everyone is like you, and those who are not are mistaken and simply need to be taught to see things the "proper" way(your way). Not everyone goes to see live bands simply to "shake their butts."

For example, I participate in a music scene that has hundreds of people at every show for multitudes of different bands (local, regional, and national), and I guarantee a cover band wouldn't fly at one of these shows for many of the reasons mentioned. So don't tell me I'm "reading too much into" what people want, because I'm not interested in what MOST people want... I'm interested in what people with interests similar to my own want. For some people it's about the creation of the art, the need to try and add something of worth to the musical tapestry, and the live show is a vehicle to express the art to others, and in that environment a cover band would serve no purpose... they would be showcasing someone else's art, someone else's attempt.

That's not to say cover bands aren't talented, or that they're not artists, or they're in any way LESSER than an originals bands. They're just different.

That nails it. For some people writing and performing originals is an essential part of music and playing. It's not about "making it" or being "a commercial success" or being "a real musician because real musicians that write their own stuff are better" or having your head buried in dreams that will never happen.

Real life scenario:
Bass player comes off stage after second set...
Cute girl: Hi, what are you doing after the show?
Bass player: Um, going home with my wife.
Cute girl: Oh. Well, good show.
Bass player: Thanks! Hey, should I ask her if you can come home with us?

Again, an age difference at work here. Consider:

From a 24 year old - "Yeah, I've got a part time job and I live with four other guys, but I've got to sacrifice so my band can make it big."

From a 34 year old - "Yeah, I've got a part time job and I live with four other guys, but I've got to sacrifice so my band can make it big."

I'm guessing you'd get very different responses from women.

Then again, even when I was a kid playing in originals bands, I never used that to hit on women. If they were at my gig it was already apparent. And if they weren't, it just seemed a little desperate to mention it.

The above is a hilarious jab at how the funny the original post was. I also like the question: what about and orchestra or jazz musicians? Original poster needs some life experiences.



I play in two bands with the same 4 guys. One is a Zeppelin Tribute and the other is a multi-genre Cover/Party band.
Between both, I'm playing 12-16 gigs a month, including theatres, weddings, frat parties, clubs, bars, etc..

I teach a beginning student or two during the week, and that's all I do. I love it. My band(s) is going to start working on an original or two soon. We have the time to put our all into it, because we don't have to have a dayjob. Instead, we improve our chops every night in front of dancing fans.

I know how yu feel, I used to cuss out Vanilla Fudge and Carmine Appice all the time 'cause they were a cover band.....:rollno:
