I have a situation...........

I thought it was more realistic than disrespectful myself, maybe you're all just a more sensitive bunch over there than people would be here. To me, Bill's comment didn't seem disrespectful or offensive, seemed like he was reading all the information (the players lack of gear and lack of basic knowledge of gear) and making an informed calculation, which is very probably accurate.

Yup, and lurked for a year or so, too. I know full well who the Honorable BFM is. It doesn't give the guy immunity from treating folks with respect.

i googled the guy... had no idea who he was... i see he builds/designs loud speakers... ok, cool.

i sell pool covers

his post was still out of context.

it doesnt matter though, the OP seems unphased by it....phew!

munji...your chivalry is noted however!:p

hey OP guy- welcome to TB good luck with the amp search

Where did I not? It's not a long stretch to take from "I don't have gear and what should I get?" to "I'm a bass playing newbie." And that said, there's nothing wrong with being a newbie, we all were once. Now if the OP said his band was playing the occasional party and frat house gig then going the OJT route could be appropriate. That's not what he said. His band is working now, and getting respectable money, so IMO what his band needs is an experienced bassplayer, and they need one yesterday, not a year down the road. And from a purely economic standpoint, buying gear costs money. Hiring a new bassplayer costs nothing.

well now im considering just waiting a little bit longer and saving money. i wanted to get the gear fast just to be familiar with it (since i've only ever had small practice amps)and find the tone that really fits the band. our next show isnt until july 25, so i have some time. im lucky i was warned about all that crappy equipment before did something really stupid. i'll get the head first, so now the search is on.

I am not a "bass playing newbie" i've been playing bass now for years. I just dont know about cabs and heads. ive played at home with small practice amps, as for actual band practice a head and cab has always been supllied but the quality is crap. its just that now it looks as if i will be playing bass permanently, which i can do and love to do.

I didn't see any disrespect from Bill. I also believe the OP should just hire a new bass player. It's going to set the band back a bit while he picks up on singing and playing at the same time, and while he saves up the coin to get a useable rig. I know not everyone is a gear head like certain people around here, but it always seems odd to me that an experienced player doesn't know much about the appropriate equipment to have. Your amplification system is as much a part of your instrument as your bass. Take it from someone with almost 17,000 posts.

Disrespect or not, I just wanted the thread to stay focused on the OP's question. I'm sorry if I turned it into a bickerfest, it was not my intention.

I'll go away now and let the folks that apparently know you better than you know yourself talk.;)

wow...17000 posts, awesome!

Munji, maaan, I've been on the boards for much longer then my profile states. Does it really "always seem odd to you that an experienced player doesn't know much about the gear he needs?" Cmon man... for years now TB has been a source of "do i need a Jazz bass or a P bass for XYZ genre.... or wait.... the awesome "recommend me a bass" threads.... if it's really that perplexing to you.... may i suggest some V8, or maybe a daily multi vitamin! (BTW, did you see the "I have $1000 bucks, whats a good funk bass" thread)

While the advice given to the OP in regards to "get a new bass player, dont do it yourself because it's just too hard and it's gonna set your band back...trust me i know what im talking about because i've posted a bunch" is most likely some sage advice... it's simply not what the OP was asking for... but im sure your advice as well as the loud speaker guy's pearls will assist in the OPs search for what it is that HE WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT....GEAR!

can you "recommend him a good head and cab" or aid in detering a future bass player?.....some poster started a thread about "sheding some light vs cast a shadow".... need i say more?....... or do i start patting myself on the back now?

Seriously, get over yourself. This is a site for people that love the bass to share their knowlege. This is supposed to be a happy place. We don't always agree, but that is the best part of a forum and why people ask questions: to get different opinions. So you don't like someones advice. Either give your own or don't complain, but don't bash anyones opinion. It doesn't matter if they have 1 post or 17,000, a beginning musician or a magazine publisher, everyones opinion matters here.

awesome.... i guess you didnt read all the posts.

you and i share the same vigilante attitude today! lets get over ourselves!

"It doesn't matter if they have 1 post or 17,000, a beginning musician or a magazine publisher, everyones opinion matters here"............thank you for reiterating my point BTW!

This is one of those threads that just puts a smile on my face every time I click on to it. What great entertainment. All for the price of my internet connection. I think you all 'have a situation........' Carry on, mates! :eyebrow:;):D

This is a great thread!

First off, Bill does have a lot of audio knowledge, but in a situation like this, his field of expertise doesn't even enter into it. Nor do I think he's trying to make it about his expertise. Other people are doing it for him, but it's all opinion here.

Second, the guy wants to sing and play bass. Anyone's opinion that he's better off just singing really doesn't matter because he's going to do what he wants, even if it does reduce his chances of picking up chicks.

Third, since when does post count or when they came on board make one single bit of difference in someone's knowledge? Quite honestly, I look at my rather high post count and I feel more stupid than I did before ;)
