What about a Lakland Skyline?
Not a truly "classic" shape body but similar.
I think you should at least try to get one in your hands before you make a decision. I was a bit skeptical at first but absolutely LOVE mine!!

But what do I know I'm just a bass player.......:bassist:

a P-bass with a little more variety of sounds ... = P/J .... there's lots of models from many manufactures that look very traditional ... new and used ... my used 2000 MIA Fender Hot Rod Precision w/OHSC , shipped , was $850 ... Ibanez has several new basses with P/J set ups ... as does ESP ...

i'd go out and try a few so I could find a comfy neck shape ...

I wouldn't mod your Westone. That bass is a gem. I treat mine like fine playable art.

$750 would get you so much if you are willing to buy used. For a MM type tone you can get a stingray or a less expensive SBMM or USA sub.

You can find a good number of used warwicks in that price range.

Or a G and L 2000 or USA fender.

Lots to chose from depending on what you want.

I'm a jazz bass guy, so I'll recommend a jazz. I find them more comfortable than a precision for both the neck and body contours (personal preference) and I find they cut through the band mix better thanks to the bridge pickup (personal experience). Others will say otherwise though, so I say go to a store and try P's and J's and see what you like better.

If you don't like the idea of going used, I'd say go with a Squier. All three of mine are awesome, but some people swear I just got lucky. I've only played one bad Squier but it might have just needed a proper setup.

If you're OK with used, you have a lot to choose from. Probably the best bet is a made-in-America Fender if you can find one in your price range, but again, first get to a store and see what you prefer so you know what to look for.

EDIT: I love the sound of PJ's too, but for me they have to have the jazz neck and body...

Don't do it. Potential for non-recoverable damage and/or devaluation (not monetary, but for you - maybe it doesn't feel right after the mods, the second pickup doesn't do what you wanted it to do, etc) is huge. Chances it will hit the sweet spot are low.
