I just De-Darkglassed

I’ve bought a few of their pedals. Sold most but the little microtubes X Is my jam. I don’t really expect DG or Dingwall for that matter to be super popular here on TB. Not really their target customers. I realize there are a lot of bass players here but let’s be real. I’ve watched tons of bass TB polls Over the years and a p bass with Flats tends to be the most popular bass setup so I don’t expect the same people to like DG. its a good brand. Perfect? No, but nothing really is. They make quality stuff imo. I’ve bought 4 of their pedals and have never had any issues with any of them. I’m just over the rig in a box type of vibe. My use of effects puts my dirt in the middle of my board. Which makes xlr outs kind of useless outside of crazy routing scenarios in the studio. I do think the ultra format is a bit overrated also. I could never get a clean tone and a dirty tone I really liked with the same eq settings. That shared eq means there’s always compromise. I guess it’ll get you through an ampless gig but I just prefer getting my clean tone from my Mesa subway and my dirt from my x. My main complaint of the brand is that they haven’t expanded their pedal line to other types of effects. I guess they really have now with the $1600 quantum thing. But at that price i could rebuy my other pedals I use for half the money.

Funny how different folks view TB. There’s over 4,600 posts in the DG “Darkside” thread since 2018. There’s certainly been plenty of “which overdrive” threads with a significant number of Darkglass suggestions. There’s quite a bit of chatter I’ve seen in the Amps forum too. Not to mention fairly DG appearances in the classifieds.

The Dingwall threads seem fairly popular, along with a fair amount of classified ads. I think the pricing is really their biggest barrier to being bigger on TB, along with their limited production rate.

Maybe it’s because I’ve owned products from each company. You know the old mind game, where you buy a red car and suddenly start to notice how many red cars are on the road.

I agree but I also think those brands get a reasonable amount of mention here on talkbass because they actually come out with new stuff. How many threads do people need to read about about certain basses or amps that haven’t changed since before I was born (im 39 years old btw) P bass with flats does always seem win the bass polls here on TB. I’m sure most TB players would use an SVT and an 810 if they had someone else to move it for them.

It’s a hard thing to get a good handle on. Most TB users only see what they see. I don’t think any user is logging statistics for an accurate graph or chart of which brands get the most mentions by the most people. Maybe the site admin people have a way to track such data, but the average users can only guess.

I do think those are popular brands with a TB crowd. The fact that Sheldon and Douglas come here to participate in threads indicates they consider this place worthy of the attention.

That said, you’re not going to find a bass that’s been around longer and had more production units than a P bass, so Dingwalls are certainly not going to be as common.

I'd Darkglass myself in a minute if I could justify the investment (little or no gigs for the last few years). Already own a SansAmp RBI which I'm growing out of love with a little (believe it or not I prefer the emulation in my Zoom gadgets). My only real concern is its lowend authority, the RBI is damm good at that. Might be the time for an X7 Ultra.

Yeah.. I tried several of their pedals and they weren't for me. But I don't play metal or heavy rock. Just wanted some light organic tube drive to keep it in that vintage soul and blues vibe. I didn't find any of the darkglass stuff to do the slight break up well. It just sounds like a very bad imitation. Got the arkham oracle tube preamp and the Amptweaker Tight Fuzz and I can nail both the B15 and SVT vibe. Nothing beats tubes but I still don't want to carry an 80lb amp. With the Oracle I don't have to compromise.

Still pretty satisfied with my Vintage Ultra V2, but nothing is wrong with changing the sound completely and experimenting with it.

Yes sir, I just got the Aftershock for few days but I confident that it could replace the dist from DG VMT, Duality & B7KU.
I also patched my Zoom MS CDR with some amp simp. If I can get the clean sound of B7KU from the amp sim & para eq, I'll sell all three DGs so I can fund a new bass.

I change my mind. If I can sell all my DGs (B7KU, VMT & Duality) , I can then fund a used HX Stomp.
I lose nothing : Aftershock replaces VMT & Duality, while HX has unreal B7KU sim (I have Helix LT for guitar jobs) plus zillion other fxs to replace Zoom CDR and I still have some extra cash :)

That's what a lot of the anti-Darkglass crowd doesn't understand; for many of us Darkglass finally delivered "that tone in our head" that no other pedal company could. And for some reason, that makes us a cult full of sheep with kool-aid stained lips.

Maybe this is the case in other parts of the country, in New England I find bass players who use DG stuff is few and far between. Nobody seems to give it a second thought. They're just another pedal or amp. If you like it, cool, good for you.

It's interesting, a friend of mine had been reaching out to all of her friends to get another amp. She asked if she could borrow mine at a show we were playing. I set her up with some sufficient oomph and grit and her boyfriend and I were kinda blown away with how good she sounded with her pbass and a little grit. She had been using a GK she was unhappy with and got all kinds of advice from people. No one mentioned DG. A couple weeks later she bought an MT500. Is she in a cult, if she just went with what sounded good to her? She'd never even heard of them.

The Aftershock and B7K Ultra II play 2 different roles now that I have both on the board.

Aftershock for overdrive and distortion flavors ( except when I want
DG distortion).

The B7 is used as a preamp, run with distortion off at least 50% of the time.

My genres are several- perhaps many; Rock and pop from 60's forward, metal, classic rock, bluegrass, acoustic string jazz and all its varients, blues, jazz-blues. Reggae, Dead, Jam, ad stupidatum.

I run modulation and time based effects post- Darkglass- everything else; pre.

I am probably about maxed on DG for my purposes
but would like to add an Alpha Omega or X-type pedal someday.

At this point DG gives me great control and variety with Hyperluminal and B7 but if I am going to add more pedals, the DG sound is covered and will add different flavors from other great manufacturers

- Idiot Blower Box wanted, Etched finish;)
