That damage does not come from strings. Guitars and basses should be shipped with strings on and tuned up. That is how ALL manufacturers ship instruments.

... I agree, though, with the above comment. I don't know about Gibsons, even though a lot of them and Epiphones had that issue at Guitar Center (I worked there in the ops department receving them in broken), but strings should always be at tension to protect the neck...
String tension has nothing to do with it. I ship and receive basses in tune all the time. So do music stores. I don't know where that down-tuning urban legend came from.
