Nick- that technique you mentioned the "slap with thumb and forefinger" sounds like one Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne uses as well. In some other threads here it was described as bouncing the fingers off the string, kinda like dribbling a basketball, for that percussive, staccato 'click.' Slap/pop isn't my forte, but those techniques are fun to do. Mudvayne's similar to me- I'm not fond of the band's music at all, but Martinie is an excellent bassist.

Comparing Fieldy's slap technique with Ryan Martinie is giving Fieldy way to much credit. Actually the techniques are much different. Ryans has a slap style, finger style, and a percussive figerstyle, the one you mentioned. The percussive figerstyle is much different than Fieldy's double string slap and pop technique.

I, like others in this thread was just having fun and being sarcastic. The other thread in which you speak of was deleted because he was being disrespectful! There is a big difference. Lighten up and don't personnalize things you see and hear unless it is directed at you.

I actually like fieldy and korn but I wouldn't model my bassplaying after him. I don't understand why everyone on this board hates him so much. Sure he isn't a great player but oh well neither are 99% of us on here including myself. I think it goes back to nearly all musicians are jealous of other successful musicians and put on this front that they don't like anything that is mainstream or popular or that is making money hand over fist. I never have understood this because as a bassplayer I try to listen to everything with an open minds and draw bits and pieces to add to my own style.

Anyway I would seriously like to meet him sometime and see if he is capable of holding a meaningful conversation about music. If so I bet he has some intersting ideas and influences.

I'm with Abark. Whether you love or hate Fieldy's playing or the band Korn, you can't deny that Fieldy's sound is very distinct and stands out from the rest. Were I to listen to a bunch of random bassists blindly, I'd be able to tell Fieldy apart from the rest. While his sound and playing techniques don't work for me, they work great for him and in the context of his band. (And if anyone cares, no I'm not fond of Korn. I thought their first two records were good, but nowadays it's the same rehashed pointless drivel and a tired act that should've been put to bed long ago.)

I'm in the process of perfecting it at the moment. It really was an accident, I was watching Kerrang TV, saw FDiedly doing this thing, and copied it cuz I thought it looked kool. Now I'm actually playing mroe seriously I;ve started to use it in my playing, and have started doing fast, percussive octave thingies with it.

Except, nobody cares what you think. Why discourage someobdy trying something a little different.

If said bass was headless, had a thirty piece laminate neck, six different preamp settings, a revolutionary drop tuning headstock; should that luthier be discouraged from thinking "outside the box". first of all, its 38 peice, and it 5 preamp, ones a standby mode , wasnt exactly revolutionary, to the electric bass world it is, but it's been done on urbs for many a year

but i mean, its just a different way of slapping, IMO a bit of a cheaters way, but im serious, why not just slap normally? its a valid question, is there any other reason besides trying to look cool, as nick said? or is that the remise of trying it

personally i see no use for the technique, same as 7+ string basses or digital camera's in phones...but this is my opinon and deals for what i use or want to use...

I can't slap very fast like, for example, Whafrodamus(Will) can. He slaps at Wootenesque speeds, I simply cant do it. So I came up with this way as getting the same kind sound, but with less skill and effort. It's cheating, big whoop.

you're only cheating yourself......personally im focusing to get a slap style the mix of stuart hamm and vail johnson..theres nothing like the real thing
