I need a new rig - different specs from past posts

Outdoors?? Tonight??? Yuck!!!

I found the same thing with my GBE750--I usually found myself opting for the SS channel as well. I have been doing the same with my BBE preamps also--I like the punchier sound of the SS pre over the more buttery sounding BMaxT pre.

I like the 212. Much more sound and bottom than my 112. I don't like the physics of the GB cab. The wheels are in the back so you have to roll it the wide way and the handels are on the side. Not good. Very awkward. I think I'd rather carry a couple 112's instead. The head is kind of heavey as well. I tried both the SS and Tube pre's. I liked the SS much better. Never been much of a tube guy. Maybe I don't need a head/preamp with both or a tube at all.

More tomorrow after the outdoor wedding gig tonight...

From everything that you've said I still believe the Markbass LMKII with a couple of good 112's would make you really happy.

I think I agree with the couple of 112's part. Still not sure about a head. Also not sure how "good" a 12 I need/want/can afford. I can get a couple Aguilar GS112 for $550, or maybe Avatar's. On the other hand, that would only get me 1 Berg or Epifani.

Make sure you try that amp first. Some really like them. I personally couldn't find a good sound out of them. I've owned the iamp800 twice because I wanted to like it. I've never gotten comments about my sound being bad until I owned that amp. otherwise, I always get compliments on my sound.

Not trying to steer you away. Just make sure you try that amp first.

Thanks guys. I asked about the iAmp because I can get a used one for $500. Seemed like a fair price. I don't know what would be my best bet.

I used the GBE600/212 outside tonight and it was great. Master at about 10 o'clock. The cab sucks to move and the head is too heavey, but the tone is good.

I think a non-tube head and a pair of 300 wattish 8 ohm 12's will do the trick.

We seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum, Steve. I can decide what my requirements are (flexibility always being poart of the equation), look at gear, and PICK. And it works the way I expected, tweaks well, does what I wanted, and meets my needs for years and years ; }

You can get a new LMKII with a two year warrenty for $599.

If I was starting from scratch (having no preamps or power amps) and had something good to provide overdrive and distortion, the LMKII would be a very likely choice. Little or no pre-voicing contour and well-chosen EQ facilites which should work well with just about any cab. Peavey, Carvin, Yorkville, and GenzBenz also would have my ear and eye.

You need a hand truck! Moving a lighter head and two 112's (which will be more than half the weight if the single cabinet each) will not be any easier. The reason the sound was great was because you have the right setup. I don't mean GB necessarily, but cab/power ratio.

I agree on the cab/power ratio. 400+ watts to two 12's at 4 ohms seems to be enough for my needs. Now I need to decide what the right setup is. What pair of 1x12's to get and which head would be best. It seems that most 12's are 8 ohm, 300 watt cabs - or somewhere in that area, so the head should be no less than 500 watts @ 4 ohms.

You are 100% correct. I don't know why I can't pull the trigger. I am very happy with the one bass I have, and I just want to get a rig and be done. I worry too much about making all the little if's and but's. The closest I came was the Eden WT-550 and the Bergantio HT112. Really, I should have kept that and bought an EX112 to go with it. I'd have a pair of 8 ohm 12's, 300 watts each and a head that puts out 500+ watts into an 8 ohm load. Stupid.

Well, that's a good start. But the wt550 isn't really light, and it's also tube only, which you seem not to like.

I personally don't like iAmp stuff. It's overly sterile sounding personally. I'd go for the LMII first. There are plenty of all SS heads out there that sound great. If you like the sound of that Neox 212, then how about a couple of Neox 112's. They should be a little bit cheaper than the Berg's.

Or how about the NeoX 112 combo? You could put an extension 112 underneath it when needed. You could put the entire thing on a collapsible hand truck, and it would be easy to move.

Steve, how about that Carvin 212 combo now? All SS, smaller than the rig you just used, 500 watts without any extension cabs, with casters and a luggage tote? And you can get the whole thing for less than $750 shipped?

Actually their 112 combo with the same head would also rate, if I wanted to add an extension cab that I thought matched well.
