I need a recommendation for Grind/Powerviolence

HM2, Turbo Rat or a Rat clone with better bass and LED clipping would be my top suggestions. Black Russian Muff would be up there too, not a huge fan of the Bass Big Muff but it does have a blend and gets some nice harshness if that's what your after...

It's sort of getting into obscure sub-sub-genres, and I can't speak for what the OP specifically is thinking about, but powerviolence is basically really fast aggressive parts mixed with very slow heavy parts, with a lot of quick tempo and beat changes usually. In a punk/hardcore, verging on metal sort of style. It's an extension of early grindcore and all of the punk-metal crossover subgenres and scenes from the late 80s through the 90s.

You know how sub-genres are though, there's a lot of variation to the point where two bands that call themselves the same label could sound totally different. I know it's kind of having a comeback with younger players now who played a lot of the death metal influenced hardcore stuff, so I think that's creeping in places too. I have a hard time keeping up with that sort of thing, so someone a decade younger than me might think it's something totally different. I got into it because a lot of the big bands of that style were from here in California and I would see them play at punk and hardcore shows and they would always bring tapes and 7"s of other bands. I'm sure there's a wikipedia entry or something for it, I know someone did a kind of oral history of the genre for a magazine within the last few years.

I think you left out the Darkglass B3K:)

It sits right next to the Rusty in attack with a slightly different flavor, but both are very capable of metallic bite.

Both pedals are relatively easy to be heard in a mix. I preferred the midrange with the B3K when I owned them both, but they both were very close in top-end grind.

What kind of powerviolence are we talking about?

check out uncle (uncle902.bandcamp.com/), theyre a drum and bass powerviolence band from pei, also new flesh (newflesh.bandcamp.com). You can get a sound like theirs by running a rustybox with the gain up, in hi mode with the boost on then running another overdrive into it.

also: ignore b3Ks, they are nowhere near as good as rats or rustyboxs.

As far as grind/powerviolence goes, I would use my Rat Tail. If I was going to play something that was more crust-influenced, I'd probably go with my Mail Order Muff.

Thank you for posting this. I had no idea these bands existed. I've been wanting to start a pv band in Halifax for ages now but can't find a single person.

I been around a while and have spent a lot of time in the undergrounds of many different genres and this is the first time in three decades I have heard 'powerviolence'. Do you think the term might be a bit retroactive? Did people really call it powerviolence at the time?

Its not a retroactive term. the style of music started in the 80s, and the term was coined jokingly by man is the bastard.

Theres a lot of bands that call themselves powerviolence that are basically bad deathmetal bands, but theyre really not. Iron lung, endless blockade, new flesh, man is the bastard, uncle, vile intent are all real ones. Looked at your profile and saw that you like neurosis. They came out of the crust punk / crossover thrash scene in the early 80s. A lot of crust and pv bands share a lot of stuff in common, the most notable is probably his hero is gone. They're the guys that the isis singer got his vocal style from, pretty much.

I'm in the same boat as you here. Have an overdrive pedal but looking for nice source for distortion. Just tried using the Boss Metal Zone pedal but it cut out all the lows and didn't sound great. I checkout out the fuzzrocious Rat Tail and Rat King and so far those are my favorite. I'm trying to find that sound the bassist got on the Infest Mankind EP. How do I get this?
