I am more a four string bass player but I also need my five string for some gigs. It makes the positioning much simpler and less cumbersome and precise on many occasions.

Are you aware that Stanley is now gigging a 5 with the high C? Which actually makes sense for him because his thing used to require switching between regular and tenor tuned instruments. When asked why he doesn't play a 5 string bass, Stanley Clarke said "Because a bass has 4 strings."
Whatever makes you a better player. Float that boat !
You gotta admit...this looks surreal, doesn't it?Are you aware that Stanley is now gigging a 5 with the high C? Which actually makes sense for him because his thing used to require switching between regular and tenor tuned instruments.

. When I master four strings, I'll move to the five! To the haters - just because you don't have the technique to play one properly, or you can't figure out how use it tastefully in your music, or you don't have the patience to find one that works for you doesn't mean that they are a gimmick or not useful to others.
I'm pretty sure the e string on my upright is an octave lower than the E string on my electric bass.
That's due to the longer string length. That perception is also why many mainly upright players are not very impressed with the bass guitar.
You also need the right amp and cabinet(s) to make those notes more usable and punchy - not just the right bass.
If you aren't talking trash about 5 strings then my comments aren't addressed to you.None of the above. I simply don't like the way they feel, the way they sound, or the way they look. Moreover, I have no use for a fifth string, but I'm perfectly happy if you do, so don't talk down to people who don't agree with you.
