Ibanez Promethean

UPDATE:
My amp was defective, this morning took about 10 minutes to turn off, but it did non work, no sound at all, lights frozen and a bad smell of burn from the rear :(
It's already shipping back to the store for replacement.
Bad luck :(

I had problems with mine originally also.
Seems like all the first run micro amps have problems.
Since mine was repaired it has performed flawlessly...

As much as I love my lead sled, I barely play it anymore.

The Promethean sounds very good with my Epifunky cabs...

I bet that would be a good pairing! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

You would be correct!

At first I didn't like the combination, but now I absolutely love it!

They project exceptionally well.

The bass seems omnidirectional, like it coming from everywhere.

The Epifunky's are great for slap.

When you hit it just right the cabs resonate perfectly.
I'm sure that was designed in.

It really has helped me dial in my slap tone.

I've have other cabs that do that, they just don't sound nearly as good...

If I understood correctly, Donovan's excellent comparison excluded the effect of the speaker. If the cab in a Promethean combo adds less than £150 to the price, whereas the Genz cab is about £350, surely that's going to have an effect.

The reason I mention this is that I've been considering various combinations and wondered about a Promethean head and a Barefaced cab, but then the Promethean head is only £190 less than a GB Shuttle 6.0.

Eh?

Tricky one, that.

Could it be they wanted to make the combo small and light?

Those who want a 15" in a matching cabinet can have one, albeit they have to make up their own combination with an amp, and it will be necessarily heavier and bulkier?

So i realize most people haven't gotten a chance to try out the 2x10 combo yet, but I did see a few people in here that have. How do you guys feel about the price on that? MF shows it at 899.00, and that it should be in stock 7-14. I'm currently trying to compete with 2 fender 4x10 Devilles and a loud ass drummer with a Acoustic B100 combo, and obviously it can barely hang in there. I'm far from professional, we haven't even started playing out yet, but I'm going to need something with a little more power when we do, but I'm really not trying to break the bank on an amp/cab, as I don't do this for a living, and money is tight these days.

Does this seem like an acceptable upgrade, or will I wish I had gotten the amp and a seperate cab, or a whole different amp altogether? Could I gig with the 2x10 combo?

Sorry for all the questions, still kind of new to bass (converted guitar player)... any suggestions for combos or amp/cab setup under $1,000 better than the Promethean 2x10 are welcome.

Given price concerns, I'd be less apt to buy new- I could probably find a different $4-600 'great for gigging' rig at least every week between the TB classifieds and craigslist.

Day, the question of whether you might be better starting out with amp and cabs rather than combo is complicated. Separates allows you to grow your system, replacing parts if you want to, adding if you like what you've got, and then selecting among the options as need arises.

For example, you might start out with amp plus 2x10; then add a 15; then another 2x10. If you have a quieter gig, the 15 or the 2x10 might be enough; but you've also got effectively a 4x10 and more available to you.

The Promethean does, of course, allow you to adopt that modular approach: you can remove the amp from the combo and use it with entirely different speakers if you wish.

You also ought to remember that these high-power ultra-light amps fit a particular niche (though they are obviously broadly attractive): for those people who can afford to spend more money on getting the same amount of power from a much lighter solution. If having a lightweight amp isn't vital, you can probably find good alternatives more cheaply second-hand.

Oh, and welcome to the fraternity of those who make the people dance.

What is this thing with 15"-ers anyway? Can they reproduce the fundamental of a B string, generally, or something?
No, but a 15" moves twice the air than a 10" but at less weight than two 10". The 5110 does bring enough lowend to me and the 5210 is a lot heavier than the 5210. If there would be a low weight 5115 model I would buy it. A seperate cab is not an option for me.

Strangely, the Promethean 15 cab is heavier, by 4.5 kilos, than the 2x10.
That's right. But the Promethean 15 cab seems to be on the heavier side of 15 cabs. My H+K Quantum 415 Combo weights 24kg incl. the amp (which is not a digital amp btw). With a weight optimized design and a digital amp I guess its possible to build a 15" combo with less than 20kg. That's what I was hoping to come from Ibanez.

Please tell me why did Ibanez just pair this amp only with stinkin' 10" speakers ??? I am seriously missing a matching 12" or 15" cab. Just an epic fail to me ...

The P500H actually sounds good with a wide variety of cabs. It really come down to personal preferences. I use my Promethean head with a Genz Benz neoX 212 and this combination gives me everything I want or need sonically.

Play what you like, like what you play and don't worry about what others think.
