Ibanez Promethean

Not to be nit picky, but they said "the Promethean appears to be an impressive introduction in a very competitive field." There was no claim that it was one of the best on the market.

In all honesty, folks, I think that Eublet is making a good point (and I do appreciate the intent behind his comments).

That being said, I can definitely see how some folks would pick this as their favorite micro head on the market. It does have a lot to offer, and for some folks, it's going to push all the right buttons more so than the competition.

FWIW, I don't have a "favorite" micro head, so don't ask. :smug: I'm quite impressed with a number of them, though (the Promethean, included).

As a further caveat, that Promethean was a "Quick Look" style review (by Martin Roseman), and does not included any kind of bench testing.

Tom.

Has anyone (besides the cello player on harmony-central) had their hands on the 2x10 combo yet? I'm a big fan of Ibanez in general, and I would really like the P5210 to be "the one" since I can't cough up the extra bones for the TC combo.

I have one. It is a very loud combo, and it goes a lot deeper than I had expected. It's not as punchy through the mids, as a result, but you can dial some in if you want. I haven't spent a whole lot of time tweaking the EQ because it sounds pretty good to me set flat.

Tom.

Hi Tom,

Do you know if there is a way to send "post EQ" signal to FOH & a slave amp at the same time?

The only thing I can think of is an XLR splitter from the DI out with one side going to FOH and the other side to one (1) side of a power amp. But would you set the output at 0 dbs or -20 dbs?
(I currently run post EQ out to foh in the -20 setting)

Thanks,
smogg

P.S. my power amp is a Crown CE1000 if that matters.

I'll have to look into that one for ya.

Tom.

Although loud is fun, it's not my primary problem. I have a line6 studio 110 now which gets loud enough for what I'm doing (even if just barely) but it really doesn't "feel" right when it's behind me. It makes the right sounds and get's about 90% of the tone I want, but there is exactly zero pants flappage. As much as I complain about carrying the HRD I play guitar through the weight of the P5210 might also be a concern. I hate to go back to the drawing board, but it's starting to look like a trip to Bass Northwest for some window shopping is in order.

I just got the 1x10 combo yesterday after pining over it for about a month. When the guys in the store let me turn it up, I was immediately surprised by the low end, which I thought would be lacking. Because you have the options with the low and high settings, the eq, and the vibe, it's like getting several amps in one. The power and versatility of this amp will be enough for most gigs.

1) How does the promethian/2x10 combo compare to the Orange Tiny Terror 2x10 with the isobaric cab?

2) How does the 1x10 Promethian compare to the 1x10 Genz Benz combo

3) How do either in #1 above compare to the tc electronic 2x10 combo?

4) Tried the AER stuff yet? Amp Two, the large Electric Bass System?

Still looking for a small, ultralight rehearsal amp. And I bought a Summit TD100 - I was missing the nice punchy mid thing from the 2BA-221, which has kind of a soft attack thing happening.

Thanks,
Cameron

Yeah, it's looking like you are going to have to either:

A.) deal with your line out being pre-EQ,
B.) split the DI output, or
C.) use a separate DI box.

I can answer #2 & #3 for ya.
The Promethean is not as Hi-Fi as the GB rig and not as "organic" as the TC. It really does fit nicely in between those two amps. Between the Shelving EQ, 6 band graphic, and vibe control you can dial up a pretty broad spectrum of tones.

Also, keep in mind the price point. IMHO, I feel it is a very good bang for the buck. I have been gigging mine weekly since October '09 and it has proved to be reliable as well.

I def recommend take one for a test drive if you can.

Howdy tsmith182! Super glad you're diggin your new amp. It really was enlightening to crank the little guy up here at Portland Music. Amazing amount of sound from such a little amp. I haven't had the chance to turn mine up yet but I've played it with a drummer and it did ok in the garage. It is however the best sounding amp I've ever owned after many years of Hartke, SWR, Eden, etc. Paired with my old school Carvin 115 it truly covers all the basses!

I just got a Promethean P5110 combo and am very pleased with it so far.

Pros: Very compact and light, lots of eq in the right places, balanced line out, detachable amp, amazingly loud for it's size, dome tweeter much more silky and natural than typical Piezo, Tilt back feature.

Cons: Metal grille prone to rattling at certain frequencies. (I fixed this by putting a strip of rubber around the edges), Gain structure different than I'm used to (refer to the owner's manual for proper setup and all is well), No place to store the power cable (I installed a couple of hooks on the cabinet underneath the amp which works great)

Compared the Promethean to a friend's EA micro/Wizzy10 setup:

The EA is very flat and balanced while the Promethean adds a bit of character to the sound. The Promethean cabinet puts out more high end (due to the tweeter) and more ultra-low end (more radically ported design). In general I would say the Promethean is capable of delivering a wider variety of sounds than the EA setup, however, it's a little fussier to dial them in than the EA. Tried both amps with a double bass using both a Full Circle and a Rev Solo pickup. Once again the EA rig was even and balanced (albeit a bit dull sounding) while the Promethean was a little more peak-y and acoustic sounding.

At the Gig: Sounded great with the double bass in a medium size venue. Plenty of volume and projection. Sounded great with active 5 string electric bass, however, use of the low B at high volume would be better with an extension cab. (hey, it's just a 1-10 cabinet after all). Played a concert in a big venue and added a 2x10 cabinet. Awesome sound, smooth, loud and plenty of low end. The amp wasn't even close to being pushed either. The balanced line out at -20db was much appreciated by the sound guy.

Bottom line: I'm very happy with my Promethean P5110 Combo. It's functional, versatile and will work by itself for probably 90% of my gigs. Add an extension cabinet and WOW! It's also quite a bit less expensive than other combo's of it's ilk. Haven't had any problems yet, but will keep you posted.
