ID This Bad A*$ Ric Copy!

I've had 2 Electras which had bolt-on necks, humbuckers and a bridge pickup surround that had a smaller footprint. So I would have said definitely not an Electra, but then ran into this interesting page:

http://www.rivercityamps.com/electrapage/comments.php?y=07&m=10&entry=entry071008-035313

Scroll to the catolog scan regarding their "stereo" bass. 3-piece neck, thru the body.

I would say the Electra might be a good contender.

Only issue is that these appear to only have rosewood fretboards from all of the pictures I've seen of them. I'm leaning towards Ibanez, as I've seen some that closely match mine. I'm not 100% convinced she's Ibanez yet (have to do some more research), but that's what I"m betting on as of right now.

I still can't believe that over 12 hours into this, we don't have a definite answer. Is this a TB record? I don't recall seeing an "ID This Bass" thread go this long without the bass being identified.

Im with the other dude I right away thought Ibanez. The Univox copy is pretty good one though.I went with Ibanez based on pics I have seen of all the Ric copies and the hardware looks kind of a bit better like as maybe Ibanez would use.Ibanez was a better copy than most

Close, but the headstock on that one looks wrong to me. That Herby looks to have too wide of a headstock. Mine is more narrow (like a Ric). Next...... :smug:

Well, the owner (T-Bird) already posted in this thread. As he stated, the headstock was broken off when he got it, so that's a DIY replacement in the pic.

This may or may not piss people off, but I'd love to put a "Rickenfaker" or "Fakenbacker" truss cover on her as a joke.
I just finished my "Frankebacker" TR cover the other night. 1/8" black plexi with a custom designed logo printed on bright chrome mylar. It came out pretty nice if I do say so myself.

Just ask John Hall :hiding:

Now why didn't we think of that? :D

You know he's got to know. :smug:

That won't cheese me off one bit.

You might also want to consider generating a 'Certificate of Rickenthenticy Fakenbacker" too! ;)

Say, maybe it was made at Rickenbacker after hours by someone looking to make a statement.

It's a Rickenconspiracy!!

Thanks cdef.

It's a quick DIY repair that has held up nicely about two decades IIRC. I've thought about re-doing the repair as I made the headstock quite a bit too short to have the original truss rod cover to fit. The bass has been with me for such a long time though, that I probably keep it as it is.

Quadzilla, take look at the measurements on mine on the previous post I made and verify them with Yours. From the pics it looks like a really close match. Down to the construction of the body. There's obviously an extra pickguard screw on the bottom corner of the original cover on mine to keep things tidy, but the rest are on the same locations as on Yours.

Of course Your bass may be Ibanez, but then it's just a bit younger one. Made in the same factory as the Herbys and Heerbys probably.

Regards
Sam

Finding the actual brand for this is probably impossible. Rickenfakers that came out of the same factory were branded with whatever the buyer wanted, and to confuse things more the same brand didn't always source things from the same factory.

So we're down to looking for a factory.

Unless it's a replacement in there, the toaster means it's not a FujiGen (makers of Ibanez amongst others).

I don't think Matsumoku ever had checkered binding and I think they also had wavy tuners.

Tokai never produced a 4001 copy - the new (and fairly inaccurate) ones don't have a confirmed link as yet.

My guess would be Kasuga, who did sell under their own brand, but also provided copies for Electra and more than likely others. (That Heerby link is interesting).

I'm no expert though. If you want one of those google Bassassin.
