if you could have 10 and ONLY 10 basses...

I'd probably skip the collection and create the following monsters:

[] Short scale, narrow string width-16mm, dual/single coil, series/parallel switch, phase switched, passive wired 4 or 5 string bass with rosewood fingerboard, and Precision body.

[] Long scale, narrow string width-16mm, dual/single coil, series/parallel switch, phase switched, passive wired 4 or 5 string bass with rosewood fingerboard, and Modern body.

(No neck dive) (Master volume, Pickup blend, no tone control)

That should about cover all bases / basses:
Humbucker mud, single coil chime, out of phase noise canceling, quacktone, and so forth.

Use pull potentiometers for the switches to keep clutter down.

They were made in pretty much every config, fretless, shortscale, 2 soaps, 1 soap, P&J, active, passive. The only thing they didn't make was 5'ers, they did that with the new korean? ones but they're different and lesser quality.

I'd like to have a bass that doesn't exist (that I know of).

A Dingwall-type fanned fret 5 string (37" 'B' and 34" 'G' string scales) with a semi-Genesis (Modulus) type neck except with the neck reinforcing material to be carbon fiber and shaped kind of like a pi symbol 'TT', with three piece rock Maple neck, a Curbow rockwood fingerboard, bolt-on neck, center block of the body is heavy Northern Ash, body wings of soft Curly Maple, Nordstrand dual-coils with tap switches, Aguilar OBP-2 preamp with active/passive switch, VTC, Hipshot A bridge & tuners, and Sadowsky Nickel-plated round-wound strings.

I think that would be 'my' ultimate bass guitar.
Not sure the other nine would matter, because I'd probably never play them (unless one of them was just like the above, but with flat-wound Sadowsky strings).
