Wow, at first I didn't notice how old this thread was - started reading it for about 4 pages before I looked. Anyway, I don't know at this point which brand or maker I would pick but I would want to collect a fretted and fretless version of each string - ie. 4 string, 5 string, 6 string, 7 string...you get the picture (I might need more than 10!).

My ultimate fantasy bass would be a Kudela 11:28 with a neck-through Novax system neck (37" on the 'B' string down to 34" on the 'G' string), Q Tuner PUPs, and with a custom Glockenklang onboard preamp.

[I don't know if Mr. Kudela would be willing to tackle a Novax bass and I'm nowhere near having enough money for one even if he did -- therefor the 'fantasy' status of this bass.]

That list are my ultimate favs/players that will be 7 soon when I bring in the 77-78 MIA Fender Precision. To round that out to 10 as per the threads question it would be cool if I could add:

Geddy Lee Dingwall (though I could never afford one of those)
Schector Omen *double strung 4*

The last one I have several choices really. A Peavey TL5, a Fender Geddy Lee Jazz, a Fender Jazz 24, some high end model Yamaha 4banger, or some lined fretless 4 banger from either Fender, Peavey or Yamaha.

My choices and what I have are all based primarily on playability but to some extent collect-ability a well.

This is fun, in the last year my list has changed again. I no longer want a Bongo, have a Sterling (blue sparkleburst), there's a Spector NS2(a) on the way (red), just received an SX fretless so I'm scratching the SVM from my list, no longer desire a Geddy Lee so scratching that, about to list my Schecter for sale, still want in import Aerodyne Jazz, and I think I'll keep an american NS2 in white on the list. I'm also adding a Rickenbacker 4003 to my list - they just look freakin cool.

Eating crow now. my first post to this thread questioned why more than one is needed. now i've got a list - and ready to start shopping.

Any suggestions on which one to make a 5-string???
