Another category which is a moving target for me (my 3rd revision in this thread).

I would like to spend a significant amount of time with the following and only keep the ones I couldn't live without (I'm guessing, around 10 basses):

In no particular order:
  • My Ibanez. It's my first bass that I have yet to pick up and think “Wow, I really wish you had (or sounded like) _______”
  • A 5 string MusicMan Stingray (white with a red pearloid pickguard)
  • A Carl Thompson 36" 5 string fretless (with an ebony fingerboard, mahogany body/cocobolo or bubinga top, and maple neck) and Bartolini electronics if I can talk him into using them.
  • A pre CBS Fender Jazz
  • The oldest Kay or American Standard that I can find that's still in really good condition
  • A Gibson Thunderbird
  • One of those 10 string basses that I can't remember who makes
  • A bleached blonde Warwick Corvette 5 string
  • a Fodera Emperor Elite 6 string in Burl Chestnut. I just saw one and that's quite sexy for a bass.
  • I'll also keep around an old Squier P-Bass so I'll have something to kick really hard when one of the nice basses makes me angry.

I have always been a one bass man myself. I only own one bass, one guitar, and one Warr, and that's it. If I had to stretch it out to 10, I would guess I would go with:

1. Steinberger XM2ATT (I already have one of these)
2. Steinberger XM2ATT fretless
3. Warr 10 string (mine's an 8)
4. 1951 P-Bass
5. Warwick Dolphin
6. Something strange from Basslab
7. Peavey Cyberbass (the midi bass from the early 90's)
8. Guild Ashbory
9. Steinberger EUB
10. Fender Jazzmaster (it's a 6 string piccolo bass!)

Gosh, that was a stretch just to get that. I think I will stick with my one Steinberger, thank you very much!

Can we go to eleven?:p
  • Zon Sonus Custom fretless five - My bass soul mate. This is the one. The bass that I will be buried with. Great, versatile fretless, best fretless I have ever played.
  • Nordstrand SC5 - If the Zon is 1, this is 1-A. I have only had this one a few days, and still adjusting to it. The construction is the best I have ever seen, and the bass sounds amazing.
  • Peavey Cirrus 6 - World class six string at a workingman's price. Great bass, sounds great, excellent playability. Just doesn't sound quite as good as the Zon or Nordie. But I will never sell it.
  • Hamer CH12 - If you have more than 3 basses, and like King's X and Galactic Cowboys, you have to have a 12 stringer!
  • Fender Jazz Geddy Lee - Because everybody should have a good Jazz.
  • Lakland D55-01 - This one is actually my wife's, but I play it a lot more than she does. Nice active, modern Jazz sounding five string. Great bang for the buck.
  • Ibanez SR 506 - My first six string. Has a very good B for a 34" wood neck bass. The electronics leave a lot to be desired. The bass is worth more to me than I could ever sell it for. It was my main bass for about 3 1/2 years. Someday it may get defretted and have an electronics transplant.
  • SX BG-80 - Because everybody needs a P bass, even if it is just a $99 copy. I own a lot of nice stuff, but play this quite a bit too. It has that authentic P tone, and is a lot of bass for the price.
  • Electra-Westone Spectrum fretless - Lot's of sentimental value. One of my oldest remaining basses, and my first fretless. I string it up with black nylon tapewounds for that quasi upright vibe, but it rarely gets played outside of the bedroom.
  • Westone Quantum - Decent Steinie copy. Most sentimental value of any bass I own. I played this bass in my first band, when I was a teenager. I traded it for a poor quality five string. Last year, I spotted it on Ebay, so I bought it. Checked the serial number when it got here, and it is the exact one that I owned as a teenager! I accidentally dropped it a few weeks ago, and busted the body on the lower 'bout'. I will repair it in a few weeks, or send it to Hambone and pay him to fix it.
  • Peavey Foundation - This was my main bass for several years, and also has a lot of sentimental value. It is semipermanently loaned out to a guy who is too poor to buy his own bass. If he ever gets his own, I want it back. If he doesn't, that's cool, he needs it more than I do. Just so he doesn't sell it, and I can go say 'Hi!' to it once in a while.

That's kind of how I acquired my guitar. One day my dad came home from work and handed me this guitar case that was absolutely falling apart. Told me that he mentioned to a guy he worked with that I was interested in playing some stringed instruments, and the guy said I could have this old guitar as long as I promised never to sell it or get rid of it in any other way. I could keep it, as long as I kept it. Turns out this old guitar is an early-mid 70's Les Paul copy that Ibanez made way back when. Dude in some old southern rock band named Molly Hatchet played the crap out of it. The electronics in it are about shot, the fingerboard's got these deep grooves worn into it on the higher strings, and the body's got a lot of...erm...character. One day I'd like to get it updated and refinished and all that. At least put a new nut, tuners, and electronics in it.

Okay, that was a long, dumb story. Think I'll go to bed now.

Umm, for some poor southern rock-loving souls out there, this could be the real-life counterpart to that fake Jamerson P-bass thread that got folks all riled up last year... :eek:

Well,of course I can't corroborate any of that history that I was told the guitar had. I can and will happily post pics and serial numbers and whatnot. It is a cool little guitar, good chunky sound.

It ain't for sale, though.

Hmm... if I'm not mistaken, he's the guy who'll build you world class basses at a fraction of what you'd pay for anywhere else... well, apart from KL that is :P I will definitely look for him when I decide to expand my inventory :D
