I'm pretty darned happy with my Dingwall AB-II 5-string, and a fretless Turner Renaissance 5-string.

I couldn't vote-- 2 Laklands-- 55 94 Deluxe with Bartolini pups Natural/Maple (which I have) and a 55 94 Deluxe with Lakland pups Natural/Maple. That's it.

I fall in the "cover as many situations as you can" camp, so for my old-school vibe it would be a passive 4 string Deluxe P with maple fretboard. Upgrades: SD Quarter Pounder P pickup & Hot Stack J bridge pickup, Hipshot tuners (and D-tuner) & a Badass II.

For modern vibe with extended range, it'd be a Warwick Thumb 5 Bolt-on. Some sort of pickup upgrade would be good, but not necessary.

Right now, my new Sadowsky RV4 is my main player - won't let this one go. My second is an MIA Fender Jazz - would love to get a second Sadowsky, though. That one would likely be a PJ5.

And I expect that in a years time, I would have the answer to the fretless.

Even though neither of the basses below are my main gigging bass, I'd have to choose these two as the they are identical in shape/function/layout but the pups & electrics are different enough that I could cover most musical bases with them. If I chose two radically different basses to change between I'd need significant adaptations of my style to cater for the differences.
