If you could only have one bass, would it be a Precision?

Well, I have a new p bass. But then again I am considered by many to be an "old thing."
This is my choice too. I never did like the jazz body or any offset body for that matter.
Just a thought experiment to test out how deep the love for Ps goes on this board. And I think that as the proportion of answers has been stable throughout this poll, other than a few minutes right at the start, it provides fairly reliable evidence for the popularity of P basses in this population. As you say, in a world where people can choose anything from a U bass to a 36" 12 string, 43% go for the bog standard P bass.

I don't want to sound like the commercial featuring Captain Obvious but 99% of bass discussion is about Fender basses. Same with amps. Outside of a few boutique amps, the Fender Rumbles are the darlings of Talkbass. I'm a niche type and enjoy other brands but I still find plenty to enjoy and learn from on TB.

I hear ya. I'd likely still pick a P as my one and only! In fact, if I wasn't a pro musician, maybe I'd have more money and I could afford that dream 60's P that I currently can't justify because there's too much other gear I need
My dessert island has electricity, as well as a vast collection of amplifiers and cabinets to choose from in addition to an air conditioned cottage with a staff to cater to my every whim. Did I forget to mention the bar is fully stocked? I receive regular shipments of wagu beef and king crab legs as well as a large vegetable garden tended to by my personal gardener, who happens to be the wife of my personal physician who maintains a vast store of every medicine imaginable, and also has a full staff of PA's and RN's that are generously compensated for their monthly rotations.
Mainland is less than a mile from shore, there is a fleet of fueled and ready boats, and I have a helipad.

My 2014 Fender American Deluxe Precision can do both
(see that little switch thing?)
My 2009 Prestige Wylde can also do this, but no tone control when in Passive mode.
(less obvious on this as the switch is a push/pull on the volume knob)
So my answer really is, if it had to be one bass it would have to be a bass that can do both Passive and Active
Which includes my Deluxe which although is marketed as a Precision Bass it is really a P/J which some here at TB don't seem to like.
I like it just fine.

Well, a P bass was good enough for Paul McCartney when he was still a Beatle, so...
I voted no this morning, then tonight I pulled out one of my P-Basses to record a soundclip (of an overdriven Alembic F-2B) and had second thoughts. But then when I really thought about it, I realized that if I could only have one bass it might very well be a Rickenbacker 4001 or 4003. So the answer is still no, but a little less strong than this morning - playing my P was fun tonight!
Most likely my Deluxe Active Jazz V US would be last man standing. However my Deluxe Active P V US is a strong contender.
There's also a 24hr Greek Dinner featuring daily specials like pot roast and ham salad sandwiches.
