I think a rule should be made against this tactic. It seems potential buyers love to post this in FS threads, scaring off other buyers, before PM'ing with a lowball offer, throwing in some ridiculous shipment or payment terms, or taking their sweet time to respond.

Not as bad is the "PM sent"... but still the potential exists to scare off other buyers, and for what benefit? Do some sellers not know they received a PM?

I've done the "I'll take it" post but not when making an offer...just when intending to purchase right then for the asking price. Not sure what the beef with "PM sent" would be - seems to be standard procedure and, as a potential buyer, doesn't hinder me from inquiring for fear that an item has been sold.

I see nothing wrong with either comment. And, I hardly see them as "tactics."

All it takes is a quick update of "item still available" after the seller checks his PMs.

And, you'd be surprised at how many people miss private messages. Anyone "scared off" by the comment didn't really want it to begin with.

What's to complain about? How about not replying with "I'll take it" if you have no intention of taking it on the terms the seller has outlined? Is it really too much to expect people to be true to their word?

I don't know if it's a tactic or just a symptom of a bunch of flaky people with itchy trigger fingers, but it sure is annoying as all get out. Used to be something like that was considered a verbal contract and it actually meant something. Try pulling it at an art auction sometime and see what happens. When they bring the gavel down, you'd best be ready to pay up.

I can tell you that I'm less likely to deal with TBers who have a habit of this kind of nonsense. Now that's just me, and maybe not everyone values integrity like I do.

I have on occasion posted "I'll take it" and it was usually very soon after an item was listed that I've been long looking for and always right after sending a pm asking for the seller's Paypal address so I could send immediate payment for the full amount.
I have also posted "pm sent" as a friendly way to both bump the listing up for the seller and let other TB'ers see that it is an item with interest from others. nothing moves slower than a listing with no apparent interest as alot of members also use that as a gauge of resale potential should they ever decide to part with an item.

+1 to using I'll take it when agreeing to the seller's conditions, I also agree that it shouldn't be used if following up with a low ball offer as it gives other potential buyers the impression you are agreeing to the price so the deal will be done.

This. It lets you know you have someone interested/question/traffic to your ad right away if you're getting email notifications from it.

Otherwise a pm will sit unanswered until you next decide to log in and check on things.

To be fair, I've seen more than a few threads that included a post saying "I'll take it!" and the OP posting soon after "Still available...". I won't say this should be disallowed, but it probably shouldn't be said unless you're planning to pay the asking price immediately after that post.

As for "PM sent", I don't see the issue. It doesn't scare me off from messaging the OP with my own offer.

Exactly. "Scared off" is baloney. If I have the money and really intend to buy, I will PM the seller even if there are two or three people saying "me next" and "dibs!" and whatever else--because you never know who will fall through. The only people put off are tire-kickers, which -let's face it- is most people, most of the time, even when posting or PM'ing.

Completely agree. Tire-kickers annoy the crap out of me...even in threads that I don't start. Back when I was an eBay seller we used to have a running joke that nobody who ever asked a question ever bought anything. I know thats a generalazation but I find it to be mostly true, even in the TB classifieds.

I did a straight swap (pedal for pedal) after saying, "I'll take it."
Just getting first dibs.
I wouldn't dream of doing this unless I was accepting 100% of the sellers' terms.
Low-balling or asking for special freight after an "I'll take it" is just rude.
It's up to the seller to manage their thread.

now THAT is a total no no!!
unless of course you just sent the payment to the seller, and even then tread lightly as the seller is supposed to be the only one to declare that. in full disclosure, I do think one time I bought something (a coveted pedal or something) two minutes after it was listed and the thread got tons of replies with "pm!" and "I'll take it!" and I did add to the thread something like "sorry fellas, I sent payment 20 minutes ago".... but that was more to keep the seller from having to answer a ton of message in the morning as he had gone offline for the night after getting my payment.....
