I'm 42 too and I love these:

Not a hair metal type bass, but I think it's the same situation. Actually, I think that my lack of chemistry with Fender style basses is because I'm not that traditionalist. Play whatever you like!

Of course you have the right. Fortunately for at least some of us, we keep those little hidden gems tucked away in our basements and bring them out to embarras our children. I personally love my basses that I had in the 80's, but would not at all bring them on stage with me.
Just my humble opinion.

bought myself a Warrior for my 50th birthday ...

it was gone before i hit 51 ... didn't live up to the hype ..

back to the old Jazz bass ... but i'd prefer a Sadowsky ..!!

but , buying basses is a safer choice than my mid-life crisis ..

over priced sports cars ...!! sadly for retirement portfolio it lasted about 10 years ...

enjoy yourself ..!!!! especially if you still have the Hair for it ..!! ha ...

It barely gets played, but it's never gonna go anywhere - If you want one, get it
edit - the reason it never gets played anymore is that it's hot pink, not that its a bad player.

I'm with you there. Gin Blossoms and Spin Doctors were about the last "new" bands that really did anything for me, and that's going on 15 years ago by now. The hyper-compressed, sub-octaved, midrange heavy stuff that passes as "modern rock" these days pretty much just makes me want to plug my ears and find a nice quiet place.
