The Steinberger L2 should be here tomorrow to counteract the
pointiness.
I'll admit I'm not crazy for sparkly purple paint jobs and that sort
of thing, but if you want one, go for it. There were some very
high quality pointy/flashy basses. Of course there were and are
some that are utter garbage, but IMO bass guitar quality really
exploded in the 80s.

I'm a lot less than 42 (cough17cough), but I think you can rock pointy basses whenever. I just bought an explorer bass (the new "limited run" epi's) and love it. I'd love a doofy(but in a fantastic way) BC rich bass, just because, you guys are right, they just look right in bass form. I played a flying V bass (the new "limited run" epi) and...yeah...not so much. Love the explorer, though...and all the other murder weap...I mean pointy basses I've tried out.
Of course you have the right. How many times are you going to be alive on this planet? Are you going to hurt anyone by living this dream?

Buy whatever you're going to play! I'm 24 and have a disease that involves me buying tons of guitars. Some for tone, some for playability, some for resale value, others just to amuse myself.

the bass-ment so much to him that at 42 he should get the point-ed one......i think that wicked alembic that the ox played with the points was the sh*t. anyway i'm 49 and i get what ever i think i need. that's the way i roll.
I sold off my pointy pointy basses and guitars and did just that. Well.............a Harley and a BMW Z4
