My only experience with DR strings so far is with the Jonas Hellborg set. A player I trust recommended them for the Dingwall SJ-4. They really do make it sing SO sweetly. :cool: Since that worked so well and I am basically curious, I tried them on my Ric 4003. Pretty cool tones. I think the next set I am going to try are some Sunbeams on a dual-humbucker bass. I'm not strictly a DR guy, but I like what I've heard (and felt) so far!

XL Hi Beams on my Peavey Grind. Love the sound. I put the short scale set on my Ibanez Mikro, and love them there, too.

I had an extraordinary customer service experience with DR. I ordered a set of DR Long Necks from juststrings.com thinking they were needed on a through-body bridge like my Peavey has. But the taper went way past the saddle. Juststrings wouldn't take a return because I had opened the package, but suggested I call DR to see if they could help with a exchange. Told the DR rep about my situation, and asked whether the tapers were really needed on a through-body and he said not unless you prefer the taper sound. I said I didn't know if I wanted the taper sound, but that I liked the Hi Beams on my Mikro. So he offered to send me a 5-string set of XL Hi Beams free of charge. To which I said "I guess I'm a DR guy now." (hey, that's the thread title!)

Oh, and I called on the phone, FWIW.

I used to be a Rotosound & Dean Markley string user until I bought a set of Red Devils for one of my 4 strings a few months ago, absolutely 100% impressed with them. Thinking about changing all my other basses to Dragon Skin and Black Beauties.

just called them for my 'dead' set of fatbeams and they replaced the entire set. Great customer service and they will definitely see my business in the future!

Hey guys,

I have currently got some Roto 55-110's on my Epi blackbird and active Rockbass, not happy with how dead they went in a week and how little tension they seem to have, so was thinking 115's for Drop B tuning (heavy rock/metal).

Used to be a DR guy a long time ago, but the store that I usually bought them from closed down and then I had problems finding a store that stocks them here in Australia, so have just stuffed around buying different brands to see if I could find something I like. I have now found a store that can order them in for me, and I am tossing up between the Black Beauties and the DDT, both of which I have never used before. Has anyone had any experience comparing them??

Black Beauties are a low tension, coated nickel string with round core.

DDT's are high tension hex core, I think stainless steel, designed for drop tunings. Totally opposite strings!

If you're drop tuning you want DDT's.

Why not just order them yourself?

Thanks for that!! I was having trouble finding information on both types of string, it's not very well listed in the DR catalogue I was looking at.

Two reasons as to why I use my new store to get them in for me;
1)it saves me all the hassle of getting them as I would need to ship them in from overseas.
2) I like to support small businesses by bringing in whatever business I can for them. The family who runs the shop will almost bend over backwards for me and I really appreciate the service that they provide me with.

I think I may just get a couple sets of each and see how I go with them. Heard lot's of great stuff about the Black Beauties but the DDT definitely seem like something worth trying out!!

Right now, if I had to label myself, I'd say I'm a D'Addario guy (cheap, sound good). I've used DR Lo-Rider SS on a Squier P, and liked them well enough. I've been reading about strings all day, and I'd kind of like to try some Fat Beams on my Squier Standard Precision V (Jazz electronics). We shall see..
