Oh no he didn't!

Yup I just bought a Fender Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass V. I have been looking at these for a while. Ever since I bought my Schecter Diamond P5 I have heard all the praises of this bass. Well I sold the DP5, and will now give the VM a shot.

It should be here tomorrow, so I will post pics then. My maon concern is the weight, as I have heard they are heavy. As long as it's not more than 10 pounds I will be ok.

I just got mine last week and I love it. It needed some fret work but other than that it's fantastic. I want to say it weighs about 10lbs but with my Brubaker weighing in at 12, it works for me, haha. It already sounds great but I like active preamps so I'll probably throw something in there soon.

Keeping the pups, I like them a lot. Probably the best stock pups I've heard on a bass under $1500. Lakland 55-02s pups are probably on level as well. As for the preamp, I'm thinking either an Aguilar OBP-3 or Pope Flexcore. Was gonna go with a Sadowsky like my buddy did but I think I'd rather stick with 3-band preamps since thats what I'm comfy with.

Nothings wrong with them. As you can see, Kwesi digs them. When I played the bass back to back with a couple of other J Basses (Nordstrand in one Duncans in the other) the pickups just seem to lack the "meat" that I like. If I played it by itself it seemed ok, playing it with other basses I felt that it was lacking.

Have you tried the OBP-1? I really like it. The treble seems so much more usable.

I believe the Sadowsky is more modern although it's a 2 band.

I really prefer a 2 band pre myself though.

I recall you heavily selling people on that Schecter when people asked for suggestions about 5 string passive basses.

What happened?

I still love the Schecter. It just didn't fit into the genre of music I am playing right now. If I was in a better place financially I would still own the bass, but I need something that works for my live situation at the moment as a backup.

I play with flats, and I tried a few different sets, but it was just too boomy, and didn't thump like I needed.

Well...first impression:

This is the least expensive bass that I have bought in my life since my first no name Pbass when I was 13. In recent years I have become enamored with EBMM SR5's, and higher end MIA Fenders. I needed to preamble so that you all have a point of reference.

OK...
The look:

Out of the box it pretty much is what had expected. I liked the look in the pictures, and I still like it. It said it was a 3 piece body, but mine is a 2, so no biggie.

Weight:

On my fairly accurate bathroom scale it is 10.4 pounds, so about what I had expected. I hoped for lighter, but this will be ok.

Feel:

The knobs feel a little cheap, and don't roll as smoothly as I'm used to (see above), but for the money it's ok. The controls work pretty well, and I was able to get some nice clear sizzle. I will be putting on some flats to see how this bass can thump, but that will be later in the week.
The frets have a few minor sprouts, but nothing I can't deal with. The back of the neck is satiny smooth (Just what I like), and it feels very comfortable. A little wider than my SR5's, but very close.

Setup:

It will need to have the truss tightened and the action is a little higher than I like. Not alot of fret buzz, and I will wait for the setup once I slap the flats on.

OVERALL:

It's about what I had expected, and time will tell. I have 30 days to make up my mind, but I'm not leaning one way or the other yet.
