I'm in love with Tal

It's all subjective, you think she's just "ok", I think she plays very well. When you're touring with Jeff Beck, I'm sure you can sit back and criticise. Then I'll listen. I'm sure you can take that as a facetious comment, and it is in part, but she wouldn't be playing with those guys if they didn't think she had chops to match, would she?

I have the Crossroads DVD and have listened to the Jeff Beck songs a good number of times. I'm having a hard time thinking of any of Tal's contemporaries doing a better job than she did on that show.

She nailed the gig, did a solo that got the crowd and Jeff Beck all excited, and all this in front of an audience the size of which would have most of us sh*tting bricks.

Sure there's better players, there always is, but I seriously doubt that the gigs she gets are because she's a 'cute girl'. I'll bet it's because she's a professional player that can bring it to the gig. I don't think Jeff Beck would make allowances because she wears a skirt.

A lot of it goes into what you like. I was right in front of the stage at the Bass Player Live! concert in November that started with Hadrian and moved to Tal as the second act. I will grant that Hadrian is a phenomenal bassist, but for my personal taste in music, I just didn't enjoy his set as much as I liked Tal's.

I'm no jazz fan, but I watched her show musical sensitivity by c hanging her set around to what had happened previous (a posthumous award), and she was entertaining.

She's a great player and she brings the goods. Nice woman, too. I spoke with her for a while the next day. She made the time to come back and talk to me after my initial greeting to her was interrupted by a BPL staffer.

So I don't think it's even a point of whether or not she has the chops, musicality and talent. It's now more about if you enjoy what she does with it, and we already know we all don't like the same things. No big deal.


PS. I thought Hadrian's drummer (Yoann Schmidt) was amazing. So I did enjoy parts of Hadrian's set.

I have to preface my comments by saying I did not read the whole sodding thread....

However, it seems to me, when Tal is in her environment she shines. No problem hearing her, she looks and sounds confident and comfortable.

However some of the things I've learned from reading through here is when she is out of her element, she has a hard time getting comfortable, getting with the music and she is lost in the mix.

Tal is very obviously concerned with her sound and wanting to hear what she wants to hear.

Maybe, she should worry more about fitting into the mix and groving with the rest.

Personally, I take nothing away from her, and I do not think this is anything a few more years of experience won't cure.

Anyway, that's my take on the whole deal.

Wow, on the next Jeff Beck tour there is a new man on the keyboards: David Sancious, yea. Very great news, Sancious is my favorite keyboarder after Max Middleton (who began his career in the Jeff Beck Group). I like the Colaiuta/Wilkenfeld rhythm section better than most of the previous rhythm sections Beck had in recent years.

That IS the deal.

If she were a 30 year old guy, the (relatively few) comments would be what a solid player he was. No one would be questioning whether he belonged on stage with Beck or got the job for some other reason. And of course he wouldn't have a million threads on TalkBass about him and therefore wouldn't have the same backlash either.

She gets more praise than she deserves and a lot more criticism than she deserves solely because she's young and female.

So many players on here, can play just like that.

Just go to a to a Talkbass GTG and you will hear for yourself.

I'm not trying to be an @ss but her playing is not all that and a bag of chips.

I still think Jeff and Tal blend quite well on this one. She keeps the groove down even with Jeffs "sporatic style" (meant in a good way of course) of playing.Props to the drummer as well. I have a 15 year old niece that plays bass and guitar and coming along quite nicely with it, so when I see Tal or any other female playing its just another bass player or musician if you like.

It gets old having people tell you your 'the best female' player around. As far as i'm concerned, I don't want to be a good FEMALE bass player. I just want to be a good bass player PERIOD.

Of course Tal gets attention for being cute and female, but she does do her thing and she does it very well. People forget that a lot of male players also get initial attention because of their looks. There's a reason why there have been (and still are) so many guys out there looking like prancing peacocks on stage. It gets attention, no doubt. It's what they do once they get your attention that matters.

Personally, I think Tal kicks big ol', massive, smackable BUTT on that bass. Everyone has an off day but its rare that you see huge discussions on message boards about it. I believe Tal does get harsher criticism because of the fact that she's female. Lets not forget even Jaco had more than a few bad days, and I'll also mention that a lot of people think he was good looking too.

Tal brings it and not everyone has to like what she brings. I like it enough for all of us :smug:.
