Tal isn't great because of crazy chops or flashiness, she's great because her playing is subtle, understated, and fits the song well. She has a wonderful sense of melody, and definately knows where her place is in the band.

I think we could all learn a few lessons from her playing.

Anyone who likes this style of bass playing is going to enjoy her music. I just heard it blindly without knowing anything about the artist and thought yeah! This is nice! I was not judging the level of chops against the greats, just digging the solid, creative (in a familiar way), Sweet New York ish tone and cool songs. I really enjoyed the stuff with Jeff Beck,very good support and interplay. No point in arguing whether she's better or worse than anyone. She's here and doing her thing and probably improving exponentially. Why don't we just enjoy the music?

Transformation is OFF DA CHAIN!!! I love it. I will be seeing her trio rip it next weekend at the Bass Player Live concert in Hollywood. I can't wait. :D

God I am in love with Tal, but the worst thing happened to me last night!
I went to see the Wayne Krantz trio (i really came for Tal), with Keith Karlock on drums, and...

The mix was T E R R I B L E!

I was in the fornt row, and all i could hear was drums! drums! DRUMS! Even Wayne Krantz and his Marshall 4 by 12 were drowned out. I had been really looking forward to seeing Tal strut her stuff (And excited that a somewhat famous player had come to Canberra) But she only had one or two solos the whole gig, and was being constantly drowned out by the drums. I had also got pretty psyched about hearing her tone live, but the soundman actually managed to make her rig sound weak and muddy. I could see Sadowsky, but I could hear no Sadowsky! :crying:

I just needed to vent my frustrations. :rollno:

I really liked Jeff's playing a lot better on the 2nd number, and Eric was great! Hardly noticed Tal, but I think it's becoming evident, even by her own words, she seems more interested in backing things up than in being in the spotlight.

The sound mix was pretty bad when I saw them too. The place I saw them at is sort of known for being ridiculously loud though, so maybe it was just shear volume that made it hard to hear her.

Yeah I think its just a matter of how heavy hitting Keith Karlock is. He really puts all of his energy into his playing.

After the gig, Keith and Wayne came out to sign CD's, and I waited half an hour for Tal to come out, but no cigar. I would love to talk to her though. I wonder if she still has her Aussie accent.

awwww I was hoping you'd say you met her :(

When I saw them, Keith wasn't with them. It was Wayne, Tal, and Cliff Almond on drums. He is a LOUD drummer too. Overall, I thought Tal seemed uncomfortable with all the attention. She seemed to almost be hiding in the back BACK part of the bar before the show. I could be wrong, of course, but that was my general impression. When a few people did go up to her she seemed totally cool and friendly regardless.

I got to talk with her (in May). I could hear an Aussie accent but it didn't sound as strong as some i've heard before. I hope she doesn't lose it though cuz its super cute. :)

Backed by a full live band comprising drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, keyboardist Jason Rebello, and bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, Jeff Beck perfromed a wide selection of material from his 30 year career throughout the week.

The live footage called ‘Performing This Week… Live At Ronnie Scott’s’ also includes Beck's version of the Beatles "A Day In The Life" and is released on Eagle Vision on November 10, 2008.

So the Ballarat bass mafia made a road trip into Melbourne to catch Tal with Wayne Krantz at Bennets Lane- and the verdict....?

Keith Karlock is a total FUNK MONSTER.

Wayne and Keith were on fire- feeding off each other and pumping it out. Tal? um.... well..... For the first half of the gig she had a total sour puss look on her face and spent most of her time trying to get the mixers attention to get more foldback. And this wasn't just a small niggle it totally threw her game to the extent that at one point Wayne was yelling "Tal.... TAL!" to get her attention before going into the next change.

Now here's the weird thing. She's in an intimate jazz venue (maybe takes 200 people max) and she's playing through an EBS tower of quaddies hand carved in Sweden from a single solid block of titanium. I've never seen a rig that size in this venue so *** is with needing foldback at all?? I get that in a venue that size they need to keep stage volumes as controlled as possible but surely if she's having trouble hearing herself standing in front of it she could turn it up?

Still... it was an awesome gig and she's a superb bassist. Just a pity I didn't get to hear her in full flight.

That is exactly the same experience I had when I saw Krantz. Tal was signalling wildly to the sound guy for more monitors, and still, even with a stack of 10's, was not cutting through Keith and Wayne. I think she sets her tone pretty mellow for a sadowsky/EBS setup. Maybe some cutting upper mids would help. She also seemed a bit distant from the other guys when I saw her.
