I have to disagree. In today's market place with independent or small company CDs all over the internet, who is to say who cannot release a CD? It's not like there are only a dozen comapnies which will only take the absolute best, whatever that is?

Oh I didn't mean that at all. I was just saying that in relative to this discussion that when you buy a jazz album focused on a solo bassist, what she presents may not be what you'd expect, or may not "wow," you. But of course that is a matter of opinion. But I have to say I am enjoying her material very much though.

There's NOTHING wrong with playing good AND looking good! She's blessed to have both.

I got to the 5th page of this and started to get a headache. This whole argument seems pretty foolish. how is she famous, why, who, what etc. Who cares? Anyone who likes this style of bass playing is going to enjoy her music. I just heard it blindly without knowing anything about the artist and thought yeah! This is nice! I was not judging the level of chops against the greats, just digging the solid, creative (in a familiar way), Sweet New York ish tone and cool songs. I really enjoyed the stuff with Jeff Beck,very good support and interplay. No point in arguing whether she's better or worse than anyone. She's here and doing her thing and probably improving exponentially. Why don't we just enjoy the music?
It's a strange thing, but it happends on almost every Tal thread on here. Most Tal threads end up in arguments and some eventually getting closed by the mods.
Some people like her style, some don't. Some people prefer good solid and tasteful bass playing as opposed to mile a minute wanking. It's like comparing apples to oranges, but people will continue to do it.

Has anyone checked out her solo album Transformation? just wondering how good it was. I love her style! No Pino Palladino though! Ha ha

Transformation is great! I recommend a listen to anyone who thinks she's just a "solid, supportive" player. She's much more than that.

Transformation is a great album. I highly reccomend it. I love it so much, I have TWO. She's a true musician.

If you watch this video from about 10 years ago you will hear some familiar riffs from Wayne Krantz that eventually made it onto "Transformation"
I just saw her on TV playing a small gig in London with Jeff Beck. She looks about 15... Anyway I didn't see anything particularly special about her playing; I mean there was nothing bad about it it just didn't seem like anything special. I like the look of her giant EBS rig though

Yeah look i first saw her at the melbourne international jazz fest in 2007 with chick corea. I thought she could have definatly busted loose more, it is chic corea after all, but he's pritty modest. And i guess she doesn't overplay which is great too. Look i i like her playing but again she's not mind blowing.
But she's to die for and i think thats probobly got to be at least some of her sucsess. Oh yeah and she's a decent bass player too lol.

Jeff Beck - "Performing This Week Live At Ronnie Scotts" live album is out on 10th November.
Also, there is a live bootleg of three or four of the Ronnie Scott dates out there (somewhere!) called 'Exhaust Note'. Quality's pretty good - and Tal's playing is excellent.

It seems like people expect a "great bass player" to have crazy chops and to play all over the place...
...yet at the same time we revere players like Pino for their simple approach? I don't think so.
Tal isn't great because of crazy chops or flashiness, she's great because her playing is subtle, understated, and fits the song well. She has a wonderful sense of melody, and definately knows where her place is in the band.
I think we could all learn a few lessons from her playing.
