I'm in love with Tal

I'm getting so tired of everyone looking at everyone as male, female, black, white... so much stereotyping and predjudice... when are we going to all realize that we're all the same. we're bass players.

I dont' see any gender on this guy --> :bassist:

that's a joke. get it?

More than anything else, I think people get freaked out by very young people who are very good. I think the fact that Tal looks young for her age hurts her more than being female. I have never heard the same sort of negativity towards women like Rhonda Smith, Me'Shell, or someone like Sarah Lee.
A very similar thing, IMO, was the firestorm over the 12 year old who was accused of knowing no theory in the General Instruction Forum.

That's because all of the names that you mentioned were not "marketed" in the way that Tal is which in my opinion is why the controversy exists. No one is saying she can't play, many are saying what's so special about her playing and what are the reasons that have resulted in her being catapulted(media wise) her up to super-star-bass-player-dom.

Really? What kind of marketing happened with Tal? I remember some buzz after NAMM (from people who saw her), and I checked out her CD.....Also, what exactly qualifies as "super-star-bass-player-dom? Is that when more than 12 people know your name? Or is that just when some uninformed morning show schmuck calls you the future of something? It's not like this kid is Ashley Simpson or something - she's a bona fide musician, who's got chops, time, taste and tone. Better than many of her peers.

I just want to point out again that this is the the 2nd time I'm ever seeing her. First time I didn't even see her at first - I heard her at NAMM, and out of the 1000s of wankers who play up a storm over there I was impressed enough to put down the bass at the booth i was noodling with - to see who it was that was noodling around the bend. I was shocked that all that awesome sound was coming from someone who looked like a little girl. I expected an old black guy (am I gonna get flamed for that?). Her playing jumped out at me, felt and sounded a whole lot more musical than many people who get touted as the bass gods of today. While I think the fact that she looks like a cute little kid helps things a lot, I think if she were the same player in a similar but male package she'd (he'd) be experiencing the same success. Hmmmm... ya know, I'm not entirely sure I believe that. Whatever. I think she kicks major ass and she's fun to watch. I'm happy for her.

Joe, you hit the nail on the head. You expected an older player, probably a Black player. Instead you saw Tal, who looks like she is a developed 15 year old. I like her playing alot, and it is naive to suggest that her presence doesn't make an impression on people, but so what? The fact that you moved to check her out before you saw her proves that she's got the goods.

Is it not obvious that she has a marketing and pr machine behind her? How do you think the "uninformed morning show schmuck" knows about her? C'mon man, you can't be that naive. :D Compare her to say Janek Gwizdala, "uninformed morning show schmuck" is not proclaiming him to be the future of something or maybe I missed that show or maybe she's playing at a higher level than him or others?

I'm an older Black guy, and I am not offended. Clearly Doug Pinnick and Larry Graham are two older black guys who don't sound smooth jazzlike, but I can see where Joe nerve is coming from: I think he meant a mature, Nathan East sort of fellow pumping out the grooves that Tal was playing.

I'm an older Black guy as well and this stereotype is at the very least preposterous(not even to mention the notion of Tal sounding like Nathan East or Joe Nerve even being able to know what Nathan East sounds like).

So you're saying you can determine the race of a bassist by listening to them? I hope not.

I think stereotypes can be dangerous but stereotyping is something that we all do. We just have to keep an open mind, and not get locked into a stereotype. For example, if I heard a Black band sounding like Cannibal Corpse, I would be surprised, but I wouldn't freak out.;)

By the way, do you know Joe Nerve? You are both from NYC, so maybe you do. Otherwise, how would you know if he knows what Nathan East sounds like or not? Making an assumption is stereotyping too.

I first heard Wayne Krantz about 9 years ago on Victor Bailey's 'Lowblow' CD. It's out of print now, but you can find it on iTunes, if I recall correctly. Great playing... some of the disc is a little hard to swallow (cheesy in spots), but there is some KILLER playing on the heady fusion stuff. Check it out. Wayne's a great player.
